A 33 year old man was sucker-punched in the back of the head while waiting on a street corner. (Perp arrested. Enrique Gerena, age 32, charged with hate crime.)
A nine-year-old boy was walking home and punched repeatedly by a teenage stranger.
A man was attacked by two men while walking home from his place of worship.
A twelve-year-old boy was knocked down and beaten by several men.
What do they have in common? All are recognizably Jewish: they are members of the Orthodox community in NYC and wear distinctive clothes.
I am trying to understand why some things go viral (“White woman calls cops on nonwhite person doing nothing wrong” seems to be a meme embraced by social media, one that triggers outrage) whereas Jew-beating is, eh, nothing to see here; no one cares.
My suspicion is that no one cares because Jew-haters and Jew-beaters come from all walks of life and all demographics. They are whites, Hispanics, blacks, Muslims. They include Hitler-lovers, Farrakhan-lovers, Marx-lovers, and Abbas-lovers. So no one speaks up about it, because everyone has friends who support it. Confronting it is uncomfortable.
Easier just to demonize the Anti-Defamation League for daring to talk about it.
This is a problem.
