For those of you who don’t know, ”Abe” (pronounced “AH-bay”) is the prime minister of Japan. Japan was one of the first countries outside of China to feel the effects of the corona virus. PM Abe (full name, Shinzo Abe) promised everyone in the country a supply of face masks to deal with the corona virus, as the usual suppliers (drug stores, etc,) were running out of them, and “mask scalpers” were commanding a substantial premium for them. Well, I finally got my two masks today, 3 months later, and a few days after my “state” had officially opened back for business. Nonetheless, people here still wear masks out in public, and I had to wear one to visit my local bank and discount store. But I guess I should feel glad, because now that the masks are available again at local stores, the price has risen from around $5 last year for 50 masks, to around $30 today. Yay, capitalism.

We’re beginning to think of what we owe the other fellow, not just what we’re compelled to give him. The time’s coming… when we shan’t be able to fill our bellies in comfort while others go hungry, sleep in warm beds while others shiver in the cold.... And God willing, we’ll live to see that day…” Basil Rathbone,"Sherlock Holmes Faces Death" (Universal 1943)

Or maybe there just is no accurate English translation?

Anyway, Abe may not be the brightest bulb in the ceiling, and he may be a little late, but at least he did something beneficial for his people. I can’t say the same about the American chief executive.

a term that dates from the early post-shogunate days (1868-1871), but they’re now headed by elected governors and legislatures instead of prefects.
