THE LARGEST CAPACITY HYDROGEN FUELING STATION FOR TRANSIT BUSES IN THE U.S. CREDIT: OCTA

    FEB 1, 2020

Air Products (NYSE: APD), a global leader in providing hydrogen fueling and related technology and infrastructure, celebrated the grand opening of the largest capacity hydrogen fueling station for transit buses in the United States today in Santa Ana, California along with project collaborators: the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE), Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), California Air Resources Board (CARB), South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), New Flyer and Trillium.

The new fueling station, located at OCTA’s bus depot, is equipped with Air Products’ SmartFuel® hydrogen fueling technology, design, and equipment. OCTA’s current hydrogen fuel cell electric bus fleet is comprised of 10 buses, but the station is built for future growth. It has a bus fueling capacity for up to 50 buses, which corresponds to fueling up to 1,500 kilograms (kg) of hydrogen in an eight-hour time period. The station can fuel transit buses with an average of 28 kg of hydrogen per bus in a time frame of 6 to 10 minutes per bus, while also providing back-to-back bus fueling for up to 30 buses and simultaneous fueling capability with multiple fueling lanes.

“This station sets a new milestone for bus fueling capacity and demonstrates other continuing innovations in hydrogen fueling. While we have designed and built hydrogen fueling stations around the world for transit agencies, this station brings our advanced fast-fill technology to transit buses by taking advantage of our unique cryogenic compressors and specifically designed cooling system as well as our liquid hydrogen supply position,” said Eric Guter, general manager, Americas Growth Platforms at Air Products.

This hydrogen fueling project is the result of several organizations working together to usher in the next phase of zero-emissions transit vehicles in the U.S. “We would like to congratulate our project collaborators for joining together for such a notable accomplishment and CARB for providing critical funding for this project,” said Guter… more: http://ritzherald.com/grand-opening-of-nations-largest-fast-fill-hydrogen-bus-fueling-station-in-california/

Asia leads the sector, can the US catch up? Why aren’t more people talking about this, like the perpetually angry 16 year old climate “activist”? Hydrogen works NOW.

“Why aren’t more people talking about this”

Maybe because they understand that this just shifts the pollution from a Santa Ana, CA, freeway to the 4 corners coal fired power plants, and doesn’t do anything to reduce total global greenhouse gas emissions.

I don’t see any suggestion in this article that the hydrogen that Air Products produces is by any other means than electricity off the grid.  That being the case, this is a good thing for drivers and residents in Santa Ana, to keep them from choking on the bus fumes, but global warming will continue unabated.

Now if Air Products installed a wind power or solar power grid to produce the hydrogen, then all of us could celebrate.

Except hydrogen from SMR is better than diesel or petrol. That is a simple fact. Not even counting the energy independence side of this- all fuel can be made in the county or state.

There are angry children pretending to die – demanding something be done NOW. When something is done NOW some people say it’s not PERFECT. This is a great example of why the US is a Failed Nation. In the 50’s the US could build a national interstate highway system that connected Seattle to Miami.

This generation of spoiled, arrogant, brainwashed “citizens” can’t even build a 2 mile fence on a border. Pathetic.

Unfortunately, that is a “fact” only if that hydrogen is produced using “green” power.  If the hydrogen is produced using power from a coal-fired power plant, then no, hydrogen is not better than diesel or petrol.  The power plant produces roughly the same greenhouse gas as would have been present in the exhaust of the diesel or petrol bus.

I checked out “SMR,” or steam reforming.  It apparently is cheaper than electrolysis.  But if our issue is greenhouse gas emissions, then from Wikipedia “one ton of hydrogen produced will also produce 9 to 12 tons of CO2,” so it looks like SMR is roughly the same as a natural gas fired power plant.

It is not a matter of not being “perfect.”  It is a matter of not providing any net benefit at all to total greenhouse gas emissions.

I like hydrogen.  It’s a great portable clean form of energy “storage.”

Claiming it has benefits that it does not have tends to make the whole thing look like a scam, which is self-defeating.
