A central premise of conventional media wisdom has collapsed. On Thursday, both the New York Times and Politico published major articles reporting that Bernie Sanders really could win the Democratic presidential nomination. Such acknowledgments will add to the momentum of the Bernie 2020 campaign as the new year begins—but they foreshadow a massive escalation of anti-Sanders misinformation and invective.

Throughout 2019, corporate media routinely asserted that the Sanders campaign had little chance of winning the nomination. As is so often the case, journalists were echoing each other more than paying attention to grassroots realities. But now, polling numbers and other indicators on the ground are finally sparking very different headlines from the media establishment.

From the Times: “Why Bernie Sanders Is Tough to Beat.” From Politico: “Democratic Insiders: Bernie Could Win the Nomination.”

Those stories, and others likely to follow in copycat news outlets, will heighten the energies of Sanders supporters and draw in many wavering voters. But the shift in media narratives about the Bernie campaign’s chances will surely boost the decibels of alarm bells in elite circles where dousing the fires of progressive populism is a top priority.

The more they tighten their grip the more states will slip through their fingers

They cannot and will not defeat this movement. It’s too massive…

    Because…the 99% has overpowered the 1%.

We warned you. You cannot win.

      @incognito I wish I share your optimism.

I will work towards it, but will prepare for the worst.

TPTB hoped that totally ignoring Bernie would defeat him. Now they will up the game to outright Clintonesque cheating, as that worked well before.

Next ploy is to lull voters into thinking that Bernie is inevitable, so no need to vote.

That’s not going to work either. Bernie’s supporters are ready for battle.

I haven’t thought of that angle, but yeah, they’ll try anything.

It’ll be funny to see the dichotomy of their rhetoric:

      2016: “Vote vote vote!”

2020: “Ehhh, don’t worry about it”.

Understand that the fallback position will be “Bernie cannot gain the votes from the AA community, and minus that he can’t win the GE.” The question will be asked if Bernie can generate Obama type numbers among AA’s not only in percentage but physical bodies going to the voting booths; a virtual impossibility to duplicate or to predict. They’ll say that no Democratic candidate can win without overwhelming support of the AA community. That seems to be the main argument the anti-Bernie forces have, and the point seems to be coming from AA’s who are claiming he doesn’t excite them.

Identity politics is as prominent in the D party this election cycle as it has been in the last 15+ years.

and which states do AAs provide the swing vote in November? PA and VA aren’t going to flip because Sanders is the nominee

that’s the problem with voting 95% for one party every two years for half a century, you have zero leverage

I’d also add that The Root’s comments have swung heavily Sanders, whereas in 2015-6 there was still “we have to grit our teeth and go with the AA CandidateTM no matter what she did” or even the jawdropping “Clinton’s much worse for AAs, but Sanders’s supporters are whiter and have to learn what it’s like to get cheated even if that irreparably damages AAs” editorial

Of all the many wonderful slogans that arose from #Occupy, my very favorite is……

    “You can’t kill an idea”

The exploiters will not kill our idea. Have faith my friends and be more relentless than they are.

I don’t think the Vichy Dems know what they are going to do yet because they have been caught off guard and are just now starting to panic. I imagine they will try several different things in quick succession, all of which will either fail or cancel each other out.

IOW, we’ll be seeing them throw a lot of shit at Bernie and hope something sticks. When it doesn’t, they’ll probably base everything on some vacuous “electability” argument that the polls will disprove and hope against hope that young people won’t bother to vote in the primary.

That is what is important. It is the only thing that is really important. If young people vote in significantly larger than expected numbers, then Bernie will win. It’s really that simple.

We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.--Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Yes! The youth must vote. That is the clear fact. Get those immense crowds that assemble around Bernie wherever he appears to grab a friend and go to the polls and Capitalism as we know it today gets a kick in the nuts. Then the swamp begins to drain.

The onslaught never stopped with the Vichy dems over at SV!  Their attacks on the most honest politician in Washington just makes me want to dig my heels in deeper!

No matter what the Vichy Dems are thinking it is time they woke up. They need to understand that we are thoroughly sick and tired of the way this country has been run since 1980 by both parties and we are here waiting to vote out anger. Nothing they do will endear them to us. That is exactly why Shillary lost and why any hand picked candidate by the DNC will most likely lose again.  They show no interest in helping the people like the old FDR party used to do.

And just in case you think there are not many of us – think again.

My cynical Devil mind thinks this is the DLC’s “contingency plan”….

They accept the fact that Bernie can win the nomination and beat the Orange Asshole in November.

Then they float the “party unity” dragonshit and insist that the VP be one of their choices. Probably Scamala Harris, so they can play the identity politics card to the maximum effect. Doubt it would be Elizabeth Warren, because the Turd Way seems to insist on hard right running mates (i.e. Tim Kaine, Droopy Dog Lieberman, etc.) even when the nominee is a “centrist” like Gore or Hillary, in some false dragonshit name of “balancing” the ticket.

And if they get away with that, they spend every day after 1/20/21 praying to whatever golden calf they worship, that President Bernie’s time in office is short, and they can then be left with the President they actually wanted.

I didn't refuse to vote for Hillary Clinton because any goddamned Russian told me to. I refused to vote for her because she is a warmongering, election stealing, Goldman Sachs fellating, Republican WHORE. No offense to sex workers.

They will impeach him with full support from the Vichy dems, so that their VP pick can replace Bernie.

Bernie would never allow them to pick his VP. Once he wins, they take a back seat. Sit back and watch the Democratic Socialist work his magic.

His administration will be made up of working class people. Not wall St. dickheads. Not corrupt corporate assholes. No DC insiders. No Washington elites to be found.

TPTB have a rude awakening coming. They will rue the day they decided to wipe out the middle class and poor to enrich themselves.

Their days are numbered and once Bernie is elected, they have no say in what he does.

Hmm.  I think they will use Russiagate again.  I think they will try to paint Bernie as being too sympathetic to Putin.  In hindsight – this may be why he supported it all along.

They will continue to tell us that it all costs too much, that we cant tax the wealthy.  That people just want free stuff – and, ironically, some politicians will say such things as “a little hard work never hurt anybody”.

They will use the same shit they used before.  I’m more worried about the unpredictable ones, new strategies being thought up.  If they really go for it, they might just hand Trump a silver plated victory.

The vote for the blue bullshit is being rolled out in all of its musty familiar lying glory right now.

I will not vote for a Vichy Dem. Period. As always, I decide who is a Vichy Dem.

they pulled out all the stops 2015-6, from hijacking the hijacking of his Social Security speech at Seattle to unleashing CP and bestiality: frankly they don’t have anything left after throwing in the kitchen sink the first time around, which is why a senile lunatic is the alleged frontrunner right now

and that’s if the DNCleaks/CrowdStrike/Russia shit my pants foofaraw doesn’t move an inch: the DNC cheated Sanders in 2016, hired CrowdStrike to blame Russia, and Epstein didn’t hang himself

I’m in So. Cal. I have not seen a single Biden bumper sticker or a Warren bumper sticker or a Buttigieg. Only Bernie. Yard signs, too. The DNC is starting to panic. They just assumed they could foist Biden on us and we’d do our duty as sheep. Blue no matter who is the familiar refrain. They truly thought by now the “Berne bros” would have thrown in the towel and would be rallying around a Biden/Klobuchar ticket. Illustrates how far they have their heads up their asses. The sooner they come to their senses and recognize the strength of the only candidate in the field who can beat Trump, the better. And Bernie isn’t going to run on a ticket with anyone who isn’t willing to be all in on Medicare for All, so that eliminates every VD in this thing. It’s going to be an interesting winter and spring.

they genuinely thought Harris was gonna knock everyone else out and even rearranged the primary schedule: Clinton’s support literally is the kiss of death and I can’t stop laughing about just how hard that particular nonentity fell

Like someone said upstream, what exactly can they do?  They already threw the kitchen sink at him in ’16.  Nothing stuck.  What hurt Bernie was his lack of name recognition and the media blackout/ridicule.

Now everyone knows who Bernie is, and what exactly could the DNC/media ridicule him over?  What hasn’t already been said?  Also, the blackout THIS TIME doesn’t seem to be working.

Panic has set in.  Grab the popcorn.

but we know what they can do, especially since primaries aren’t as closely monitored as generals–voter caging, ballot harvesting, closing poll sites, maybe even hiring line-standers

I can’t tell if having pushed so many candidates will help or hinder them in diluting Sanders’s vote, though

the main danger for Sanders I think would be talking about Trump more than what America needs and 70% of Americans want: that’ll let it stay a blue-vs.-red race and there’s plenty who just vote red

“Stop Bernie campaign like I’ve never seen”?

Hardly,  I was a regular at SV until their queen finaly stole the nomination and we were required to sign that damned loyality oath ya know.

I look forward to ghosting through there to be warmed by their hate once Bernie wins the nomination and their membership are called on to sign another oath of fealty.

Oh, no oath signing you say? Trust me, a not so gental reminder will happen! I damn well had to sign the last one…it still hurts, my account is still active and as God as my witness I will be leading the pack reminding them of it! FAIR IS FAIR!

Yeah, thats me, Chknltl. I despise corporatism as a form of government and that is how I shall treat those who support it.
