How the Oil Industry Made us Doubt Climate Change

As climate change becomes a focus of the US election, energy companies stand accused of trying to downplay their contribution to global warming. In June, Minnesota’s Attorney General sued ExxonMobil, among others, for launching a “campaign of deception” which deliberately tried to undermine the science supporting global warming. So what’s behind these claims? And what links them to how the tobacco industry tried to dismiss the harms of smoking decades earlier?

To understand what’s happening today, we need to go back nearly 40 years.

Marty Hoffert leaned closer to his computer screen. He couldn’t quite believe what he was seeing. It was 1981, and he was working in an area of science considered niche.

“We were just a group of geeks with some great computers,” he says now, recalling that moment.

      But his findings were alarming.

“I created a model that showed the Earth would be warming very significantly. And the warming would introduce climatic changes that would be unprecedented in human history. That blew my mind.”

      Snip …

PS – We knew – Capitalism covered up the truth.

Rights aren't rights if someone can take them away. They're privileges.
That's all we've ever had in this country, is a bill of temporary privileges.

Money is GOD and without money you can’t be obscenely rich. And if you are not obscenely rich you are not a success. The Constitution, or something says so.

We are an arrogant species, believing our fantasy based "facts" are better than the other person's fake facts.
If you are wrong, it will be because you are not cynical enough.
Both major political parties are special interest groups enabling each other for power and money, at the expense of the people they no longer properly serve…

Not just the fossil fuel industry which has destroyed Oklahoma, the state I grew up in, the other corporate rulers (health and pharmaceutical, military) are destroying the planet for their own profits.  They are in control and will not give up.  The rest of the planet will collapse around them…and they will watch the rest of us suffer before they give an inch.  They have conditioned the US to do nothing and the US with its military monopolies will prop up the titanic even while it sinks.

And we’ve just seen from the Covid pandemic how useless political elites are.

You got a mouse in your pocket, BBC?  Those of us not in fealty to the status quo haven’t had any doubts for a long time.   In fact, it’s been known among people in the know since at least 1958.

And causing doubt leads to “some people say” which maintains and deepens the doubt among true believers.

The Big Lie: "Make the lie big, Make it simple, Keep saying it, And eventually they will believe it." AH.

"Arguments must therefore be crude, clear and forcible, and appeal to emotions and instincts, not the intellect." JG

National issues (slavery/racism, income inequality, pandemics and pathetic health care, weak unions) are not solved with more states' rights. Global problems (climate change, migration, trade, war, pandemics) are not solved with more nationalism.

Put a Tiger in Your Think Tank<– Link

ExxonMobil has pumped more than $8 million into more than 40 think tanks; media outlets; and consumer, religious, and even civil rights groups that preach skepticism about the oncoming climate catastrophe. Herewith, a representative overview.

There’s a fascinating, damning chart here:

Of course, James Hansen, Bill McKibben, and Al Gore warned about the science far earlier, but the MJ piece documented the deliberate disinformation.

Don’t worry, kids! Although it might seem blindingly obvious — to paraphrase Bill Hicks, “for people who dabble in facts” — that capitalism is the problem, it’s just a few bad apples.
