How to Help the People and Island of Puerto Rico

The situation in Puerto Rico is dire and according to recent reports, they are not receiving timely nor adequate assistance/support from the U.S. government.

In addition, foreign aid is not being allowed due to the Jones Act.

If you have other ways to support the people of Puerto Rico, please post here.

    Thank you.

Here’s How You Can Help People In Puerto Rico – 3.5 million Americans are enduring “apocalyptic” conditions right now because of Hurricane Maria.

Of the places mentioned for donations, do you have one that you recommend most?

          6. Unidos – the

“local” new york effort which states 100% of donations will be going directly to the citizens of Puerto Rico.

because of the restrictions to how aid from foreign efforts can be delivered to the island (must be U.S. ships, only), there will be delays from any foreign efforts or deliveries by foreign ships.

    4. The US Navy should have already been there

It is not uncommon for US naval ships to follow catastrophic storms into port to lend aid. Above and beyond the millions of gallons of potable water that can be created a day by some ships and the food that can be delivered, the Sea Bees could assist in the rebuilding of the infrastructure that was destroyed.

Please call your representatives and senators to demand this action. Please talk about this on social media. Trump may not know how to get to an island (“its in the middle of the sea, you know, the sea is so big…”) but the navy sure does.  And not for nothing, the navy owes Puerto Rico.

this. thank you, puffgranny. apparantly 9 legislators are trying to get a waiver of the jones act for puerto rico. this would facilitate non us built ships to deliver support directly to puerto rico. i realize organizing assistance efforts take time – but our military has no excuse since they should and have been at the ready to deliver aid to texas & florida and can do the same for puerto rico.

    9. This is an outstanding small charity with 5* rating

I personally know the people who run it and it’s probably the cleanest most honest most efficient little charity in existence. ie, your donations will never be wasted, not a penny.

      https://www.democracynow.org/2017/11/3/in_puerto_ricos_highlands_hurricane_maria

as for power, amy reported last week (she was there same time as bernie) that the power company and structure admitted they have only been able to repair 30% of the company’s service – not 30% of the island’s need for power. essentially, very few towns have power other than those with generators or solar powered generators. the majority of the island is still without running water because there is no power for pumping water.

Pocket Protest: A Social Media Movement Helps Turn Puerto Rico’s Power Back On
    By Tim Padgett • Dec 11, 2017

    -snip-

This is a story about an effort that many of them say helped get it back – Puerto Ricans like Yamillette Bernier.

“After Maria, I was 60 days without light,” says Bernier, a teacher and single mother in Caguas, in the Caribbean island’s interior.

    -snip-

“I was just trying to survive with my flashlight,” Bernier recalls. “Everything was hot, and we couldn’t sleep. We were mosquito food. It was very difficult.”

Adding insult to injury: Each night Bernier looked across the street and saw a functioning electrical substation. With lights on.

“I said, ‘This doesn’t make sense,’ ” she says.

It didn’t seem logical. But Bernier’s street was part of a bolsillo – a “pocket.” Bolsillos are common inside Puerto Rico’s decrepit power grid. They’re areas the island’s Electric Energy Authority – AEE – seems to have forgotten about. -snip- more at above link.

Social Media Movement Pushes Puerto Rico Officials To Restore Island’s Power

    January 04, 2018
    Tim Padgett, WLRN

It’s been almost four months since Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico, and almost half the U.S. territory’s residents still have no electricity.

Tim Padgett (@TimPadgett2) from WLRN reports one social media movement is pushing the island’s officials to restore electricity more quickly.
