I can assume it has something to do with Chump, or something related to that POS. But why do video’s say a “Karen” was on an airline flight, or a “Karen” was in a grocery story arguing with a clerk. Why is it called a “karen”? Can someone splain this for me?

      https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Karen

Middle aged woman, typically blonde, makes solutions to others’ problems an inconvenience to her although she isn’t even remotely affected.
Karen sues the local city council after they installed a new STOP sign that hides the sun from her window for two minutes a day. The sign was installed after a school boy on his bicycle was hit by a speeding driver and died.

Karen refuses to wear a face mask for her 5 minute trip to the supermarket during a pandemic. She harasses the workers, asks to see the manager and threatens to sue.

Karen complains that her favorite parking spot was replaced by a ramp for wheel chairs. She parks her car in the old spot anyway and shoots a vlog about it.

usually involving bigotry of some kind or another. Male “Karens” are sometimes referred to as “Kevins”.

Some women actually NAMED Karen who do not go off on such hysterical rants are understandably NOT fond of the nickname.

Most recent “Karen” that I’m aware of is some crazy FundaMENTAList wackjob ranting about gays & Disneyland on an airplane……

Anyway, when driving past the Publix that is near a pretty affluent neighborhood, I watch out for “Karens” – women in big shiny SUVs or whatever who pull out of the parking lot into traffic with barely a glance, and then, if sailing into the median lane in order to turn left, just giving a quick look to make sure the rest of us have recognized her presence, and assumes that we will stop or slow down, so she does not have to wait for a break in traffic.  Not big trucks, mind you, SUVs and the like.  I am long past thinking that everyone with money must be a Republican.

I just call them privileged bitches and bastards. I know a real Karen, who is not like that at all, and resents the besmirching of her good name. As for Kevins, I think the Irish should protest since that’s a good old Irish name. Guess they can’t be names usually more associated with privilege, like Priscillas and Nelsons.

Or how about Hillarys instead of Karens? Nah, just because one privileged bitch is named Hillary there’s no reason to smear all of them. I think it’s a stupid practice, and don’t use it myself.

who was always spying on her neighbors. The TV character Gladys Kravitz (from “Bewitched”) was rarely if ever seen outside of her house, so it’s hard to think of her as a “self-entitled twit”– just an overly nosy neighbor.

The “bullying-their-way-in” manner of driving, spurred by their sheer sense of self-righteous indignation. You’ll also see this as they exit their subdivisions to enter a thoroughfare. Even though they have a stop sign, they’ll dart right up to the intersection to the degree you know they have no intention of even yielding, let alone make a full stop. The rational among us tooling down the thoroughfare see this, freak out because we know there will likely be a collision if we don’t brake hard. We do, “Karen”, being satisfied we’re aware of the peril of her presence, then haughtily “steals” our right of way.

these days calling people disparaging names, deserved or not, must also have age, gender, assumed political affiliation, and state of residence attached to it.

Karen is a fairly common name. A reasonably, more descriptive name is in order. Asshole has already been taken and doesn’t begin to cover it, but the women actually brandishing the “karen” moniker really need a more putdownish label.
It’s a long shot, but maybe if we here at JPR can come up with a better designation, than what is an insult, a putdown to many innocent women, just because of their given name.

An immature nickname we give to a woman having a meltdown in public, who has been filmed by some shit weasel who is so petty he/she feels it’s their duty to broadcast their personal squabbles to the world (bonus points if you can craft a race narrative out of the footage, or tie her to conservative politics).

who asks to “speak to your manager” or calls the police for the most minor perceived offenses such as when a black family has a picnic in a public park.

The historic precedent for Karens are the lynchings of the Jim Crow era when white women could have any black man lynched for speaking to or even looking at them. The term grew is usage after Amy Cooper objected to a black man in Central Park asking her to put her dog on a leash as required by law. She tried to have him Emmett Till’d:
      (pre-call)
AMY COOPER: I’m gonna tell them there’s an African-American man threatening my life.
      (calls 911)
I’m sorry. I’m in the Ramble, and there is a man, African-American, he has a bicycle helmet. He is recording me and threatening me and my dog. There is an African-American man, I am in Central Park, he is recording me and threatening myself and my dog.

More broadly the term is applied to women who lose control of their emotions over perceived social slights and have melt-downs over a variety of things — parking places, mask wearing requirements, being pulled over for speeding, etc.

The end result is most of what they are trying to record, is colorful back and forth blurs.
How many movies and how much TV have they watch in portrait mode? None at all. So why can’t so many people make the connection?

A self important white woman expressing outrage in public over perceived offenses, which usually exhibits racism or homophobia on her part.

I could be wrong, but I believe the first recorded Karen was at Lake Merritt in Oakland, CA. She was outraged at a black family having a barbecue at the lake. Karens have proliferated ever since. It’s unfortunate that a perfectly fine name is now associated with this type of behavior, but it’s stuck.

      @satan

Most of us have probably seen little kids or toddlers having huge tantrums at the grocery store… But this shit was like 10 times worse.

That is one seriously messed up lady – and while I think there should be consequences for her attempted assault – I also think this is an example of why we need more long term psychiatric facilities.  If that ain’t enough to blue paper someone and get them help until they can chill the fuck out, I don’t know what is.

I looked around and found the full video.  The video posted by @satan really is the perfect answer to the OP.

Basically, white lady attacks black lady (not sure why) in a Victoria secret at a mall – black lady starts recording with her phone.  White lady immediately begins throwing one of the most insane tantrums I’ve ever seen (and I have seen some whoppers) screaming, crying, lying down on the floor and shaking.  She keeps screaming at the black lady to stop recording, says the black lady is threatening her.

Eventually white lady chases the black lady around the store, screaming profanity at her.  Shortly after this, white lady calls the cops about the dangerous black lady.

Two white cops show up and treat the white lady like the victim.

Some crazy fucking shit right there.  Had the shoe been on the other foot, they would have almost certainly arrested the black lady.  Security didn’t even try to defend her.  No one at Victoria Secret did.

So I don’t blame her one bit for recording all that shit or sueing those asshole cops.

Anyhow – that is a Karen.  This is not meant to imply anything about any person actually named Karen.  It is like saying negative nancy, downer dave, shit like that.

He was actually pretty liberal, for a 1970s governor of a Southern state. And he did try to get the ball rolling for universal health care when he was elected President. Unfortunately, he let his sexual peccadillos get the best of him.

And he charged a pretty high fee for his and his wife’s services to the kleptocracy. They’re millionaires many times over now.

It really doesn’t matter to me how sincere the Clintons were in their younger days about fulfilling the long term goals of the New Deal and Great Society, all that matters is what they did, and continue to do.

I also realize that is easy for me to say because I am not from Arkansas and never had any attachment to the man, other than liking him in 1992.

Starting with the Republican Winthrop Rockefeller (1967-71), then Democrats Dale Bumpers (1971-75), David Pryor (1975-1979), and Bill Clinton (1979-81). (Note: Both Bumpers and Pryor left the governorship after they were elected to the US Senate, giving the state one of the country’s best Democratic representations in the Senate until the 1990s– and I met both of them personally, as well as Clinton). However, the state got caught up in the “Reagan Revolution” of 1980, and Governor Clinton was defeated in his re-election bid (Arkansas governors’ terms were only 2 years in those days) by arch-conservative Frank White, who rode in on Reagan’s coattails. According to the Arkansas Times, or maybe the Arkansas Gazette (many Arkansas Times staffers came from the Arkansas Gazette), Clinton was persuaded to become more “conservative” in order to defeat White, which he did in 1982. And after that, he had the ear of the state’s conservative Democrats, in a Southern state, during the Reagan era. Of course, that didn’t endear him so much to my liberal professors at the University of Arkansas in those days, but they had even choicer words to say about the the state’s First Lady. But that’s a topic for another time.

campaign as conservative in order to get elected, and then that candidate will be more progressive.  Nope.  And then, of course, that candidate cannot actually be progressive if that candidate wants to raise money and get re-elected.  So, basically, the Dems  are conning people into voting for agendas that are conservative, and that is the clever way the Democratic Party stacks what used to be a party for working people into a basically austerity-driven and warmongering party.    They just lie and obfuscate a lot more than the GOP, that’s all.  IMO.  Everything is now presented in terms of raising money, getting elected, and, of course, lesser evil.

I met Sens Bumper and Pryor. I wrote letters to them, they always wrote back (and not just form letters). I checked their voting records, and I concluded that they were the kind of Senators I wanted representing me. In fact, after listening to Senator (David) Pryor at a presentation in Springdale, Arkansas in the late 1980s, I just had to shake his hand and tell him that I was so glad that he was representing my state. He was a wonderful Senator. We haven’t had anything like him since he retired (Sen. Bumpers retired before Sen. David Pryor did).

make much headway against the establishment conservatives like Pelosi and Schumer.  I just look at what actually gets passed now.  Just looking at how an individual votes makes the whole thing into sort of a TV show, for me.  And some vote progressively because they know a bill won’t pass anyway, just piling up campaign creds.  In any event, your historical happiness with your representation from and in Arkansas is no reason for me to vote for a Democrat today.

OK, I get that– Florida Democrats suck!  Every one of them, right? They all suck, right? Worse than Florida Republicans, right?

But I’m telling you right now, not ALL Democrats suck! OK? The last Democratic governor of Arkansas actually had the people’s interests at heart, and he embraced extended Medicare, and imposed a moratorium on state executions, unlike his POS Republican successor, who couldn’t wait to repeal extended Medicare and start executing prisoners before the lethal injection drugs expired.

any other state, no matter how beloved and helpful,  have no bearing on who to vote for in upcoming elections.  I know all democrats do not suck, but the current Democratic Party renders them unable to do anything progressive.  I am quite unlikely to have a progressive Democrat to vote for any time soon, that’s all.  Here in Florida, or for national office.

The murder of Emmett Till and the full on terrorist assault on the “Black Wall Street” area of Tulsa Oklahoma were basically caused by “Karen” types making false accusations against young Black men. Of course there weren’t cell phones available in those days to catch those racist Karens in the act and prevent the tragedies that resulted from their lies.
