If there's war with Iran, there's plenty of blame to go round, but the buck stops with Donald Trump.

Back in 2001, George W. Bush surrounded himself with a bunch of warmongers who directly profited off of war and exploitative capitalism, so it was no surprise that they used 9/11 to push for the conquest of oil-rich Iraq. In 2009, Barack Obama surrounded himself with Wall Street types who profited off the kleptocratic system which caused the Great Recession and also made oodles of profits off of war, so it was no surprise that he bailed out Wall Street, failed to withdraw from Iraq as promised, and created the imperial messes in Libya and Syria.

Who was ultimately responsible for the bad decisions made? Bush and Obama. They could have appointed different advisers and they could have said No. They didn’t, therefore they bear a huge responsibility for what happened on their watches.

In 2017, Donald Trump surrounded himself with a bunch of kleptocrats, white collar criminals, and sycophants. His foreign affairs and defense people were initially at least rational ones. Rex Tillerson, Mad Dog Mattis, and H.R. McMaster would have argued vociferously against assassinating Qassem Soleimani because they all knew it would be the equivalent of killing one of them and would quite rightly be interpreted as an act of war. They also knew that an Iran War would make the Iraq War and occupation look like slightly strenuous military exercise.

Their problem is they didn’t kiss Trump’s narcissistic ass enough to please him and even had the nerve to tell him he was wrong or didn’t know what the fuck he was talking about. So he fired all of them and replaced them with a bunch of warmongers who were more adept asskissers. Pompeio’s always been a shameless neocon warmonger for the expansion of the Empire. Esper is former CEO of Raytheon, of all things, and must have been delighted to see Raytheon stock go up after this latest assassination.

No, I haven’t forgotten the Democratic warmongers with names like Pelosi and Schumer. The last NDAA had an amendment to specifically require the consent of Congress before taking any offensive action against Iran, but those two made sure it was pulled just days before Trump pulled his bloody stunt. For all their talk about how Trump is a criminal and unfit for office, they still insisted on giving him virtually unchecked power to make war. If this doesn’t prove their own unfitness to lead, and by implication Joe Biden’s as well, then nothing does.

Still, it was Donald Trump who surrounded himself with these bloody-minded assholes, and it was Donald Trump who gave the order, so the buck stops with him. Period. Just like it did with George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

I’ve always tried to be consistent in my critiques of politicians based on policy. The only presidential candidate who has displayed consistency on the critical issues of war and peace since 2001 is Bernard Sanders. As far as I’m concerned, he’s the only one who has earned  the votes of those who are opposed to Forever War, which makes him far more likely than the others to defeat the current monster occupying the White House.

    He’s playing the victim.

“They did it too!”  is a rather pathetic excuse for murder.

The buck has to stop with Trump. No matter how much power he was handed on a plate by the complicit Dems,he didn’t have to use it.

Whatever happens,it’s all on his head.

Max Blumenthal has a possible scenario – that someone came up to Trump at lunch and said, “a major terrorist has just surfaced. We can drone him sir, but we need you to authorize it now.” and he said, “Sure.” and went back to his happy meal. Sound possible? It exonerates him exactly 0%, but is quite believable. IMHO Bush intentionally created his out of control imperial court, and Obama sold out to it, almost certainly before he ran – in fact almost certainly as a condition for being allowed to run. Trump allows his degenerate imperial court because it feeds his ego – it exonerates him not at all.

When the CIA told Jimmy Carter that 300 Cuban ditch diggers were 30,000 soldiers he fired people. It didn’t help, but at least he tried.

@doh1304 I think it’s possible, if you add Trump was told it would be great for his ratings with his base and he’ll be able to call the Democrats unpatriotic or treasonous if they oppose him on this. He really is that stupid. If he thinks it will help the ratings of the The Apprentice: White House Edition and maybe make a few bucks for Trump, Inc. he’ll go for it.

      @mistap I don’t think tweets are copyrighted:

“Officials presented the president with options. The Pentagon tacked on the choice of targeting Suleimani mainly to make other options seem reasonable. They didn’t think he would take it. When Mr. Trump chose the option, military officials, flabbergasted, were alarmed.”

That’s likely. Trump probably thought it would help his ratings. That may also explain why Pompeio had planned to go to Kiev today, I think. He didn’t, of course. That also looks like a deliberate leak. Like Pence and the Republicans will do anything about it; they’re too afraid of their own base. The Vichy Dems will not do anything substantial, of course. They’re so worthless.

Yes, Trump is the one responsible; however I would like to add

Bibi and Mossad. Mossad did not dare to kill him, but they knew

    exactly where he was.

@sadoldgirl Ayup. They certainly own their share of this bloody mess, and may the Fates frown on them.
