If we’re renaming every place associated with slaves and slave traders we have to rename America

I was curious and looked it up – both Amerigo Vespucci, who American is named after, and Christopher Columbus were slave owners and traders.
“Unlike Columbus, Vespucci never waged war on the natives, nor did he found any colonies. He never commanded a fleet or even led an expedition. Like Columbus, however, he was deeply mired in the slave trade and profited from it.” ( http://nativeamericannetroots.net/diary/1332 )
I’m a little surprised that this hasn’t been raised over the last couple of years.

Once, there was ‘the Occident’, and ‘the Orient’. But the racist origin of the terms (and how the ideas supporting such terms served to help in the colonization of non-European territories) came to light. Thus, such terminology fell out of favor, and nobody legitimate uses the terms today. Times change.
For those who think this idea is radical, consider Constantinople. Yes, times change, and as whitewash/amnesia wears thin, we see historical figures for exactly who they were – the oft-mentioned “stain” of slavery on the history of the United States didn’t just pop up from nowhere; there were Americans committing these human rights abuses.
As I’ve gotten older, it’s incredible to me learning (as I have) that almost everybody who was anybody in pre-Civil War America was involved in the slave trade. Disappointing, really.
But, as the expression goes, it is what it is, history.

Amerika by any other name would smell just as rancid.
