(The Hill) Protesters at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad are withdrawing and declaring victory after camping outside the compound all night, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

The protesters, who support the Iranian-backed militia group Kataib Hezbollah, are now calling for the nation’s parliament to push for U.S. troops to leave Iraq, according to the Post.

The retreat follows a chaotic Tuesday protest where demonstrators stormed the embassy in response to U.S. airstrikes in Iraq targeting the militia group and killing 25 people over the weekend.

The Popular Mobilization Forces, the umbrella organization of several Shiite militias, ordered protesters to leave the embassy “out of respect” for the Iraqi government’s directions Tuesday, according to the newspaper.

This is Hezbollah. They are organized, disciplined, and they fight well. Anybody who can give the Israelis a bloody nose can fight well. What will Trump do if and when the Iraqi Parliament votes to expel all American troops from their country?

This could get real interesting real quick.

      Hi ob,

Would it not be ironic if Trump was forced to “Shock and Awe” our newly built Iraq embassy to thwart the will of the Iraqi people.

Or equally ironic if we withdraw US troops which then mimics our withdrawal from Vietnam.

How embarrassing for that to happen on Trump’s watch.

We need to stop occupying Iraq. And Afghanistan. We need to pull our troops from Germany, S Korea, Malaysia, Japan, and probably 25 other countries we’ve never been ‘invited to’…Syria!  What’s up with that? A sovereign nation that does not want us around faking chemical attacks.

FFS we don’t have what it takes to rule the world. Stop. Now! Imagine what kind of infrastructure upgrade we could accomplish with all those servicemen and servicewomen hanging out at PXs worldwide! Stop the madness!

@elias39 Yes. It would be quite a statement if many countries forced the US occupations out of many Countries as well as those from China and other places that are exploiting resources and abusing the planet and others. Many of the Orange aligned leaders must go as well. I would like to see the US being extracted from many countries as a mass movement. Then the fight will be up to us as they destroy even more this environment. It is here already in that anticipation of the dislike others have for us but it is time for the fight.

@thouartthat Ah, one of my favorite photographs from the Vietnam Debacle. The Hezbollah in Iraq folks sent a very clear message, that they can just swarm the Viceregal Palace, er, Imperial Embassy, anytime they want to and that anyone inside should feel fortunate if the Iraqi Army and police do nothing, for the alternative is them helping Hezbollah.

I think the Iraqi Parliament is very likely to vote in favor of a resolution calling for American withdrawal, and that the reasonable thing to do is to heed it. I have no idea WTF Trump and his band of sycophantic advisers will do, though. I am sure that most Americans will not support a new surge or something in Iraq, but this Congress is dominated by warmongers, so who knows?

@ohiobarbarian  You have no idea how many Americans equate our presence in other Countries “as saving the US from invasions and threats or protecting America”. The rah rahing of this killing is followed by total ignorance of facts. It is really disheartening.

Trump will probably send out faithful allies the Kurds to quell the disturbances.

Oh, wait….the Kurds are no longer all that faithful since Trump betrayed them.

They (the oligarchy, military industrial complex, political establishment, etc.)  are never going to willingly pull out.  It will either have to be forced by mass resistance here – or too much loss there.  I do not mean loss of life – but of profit and regional control.

As long as our forces are present in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, surrounding Russia -and so on.. the American Empire has a stranglehold over most of the worlds remaining oil supply.  This is also why our powers that be are still fucking around in Venezuela.

At some point in the not so distant future (if we live long enough), it will most likely be about clean water and food resources (good soil, etc.)  instead.  Then we will probably see a massive shifting of our forces.  Probably not for decades though.

Climate change will ultimately make food and water the winning resources.  Right now, in America and other Countries, there is an illusion of comfort, that these things will surely not run low….

They will.  Climate change will force the issue, if nothing else does first.

So, no, they arent going to leave.  We arent going to bring them home without a lot more blood being spilled.  Maybe an American civil war could do it.  Not sure what else.

Our politicians are controlled by the oligarchs – and our politicians write the legislation and vote on how our military is deployed.

I think people like Sanders and/or Gabbard would make a serious effort, but…

Consider the most recent budget vote.  They are almost entirely alone in a sea of corruption.

@davidthegnome I am confident that if Sanders is elected we will withdraw from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. The only thing that could stop him would be Congress, and they’d have to override a veto. I don’t see that happening.

I wrote and discarded several replies.  Too cynical.  I hope that you are right, I really do.  I just have my doubts that Congress will really support him.  Perhaps he can call upon the people to rally against their obstruction – and perhaps we will.

I just have precious little faith in Congress or the Senate.  Too often, when I go to the voting booth, the temptation to write “fuck you” in each slot is overwhelming.  I dont do it, but…

@davidthegnome The one area where the President has the most power is foreign policy. If Bernie is elected, he will be the Commander-in-Chief. He can order a withdrawal. He can bring the US back into the Iran nuclear agreement at the stroke of a pen. Congress may buck some, but they’ve given away so much power to the Executive Branch, and Bernie can wield that power just like Bush, Obama, and Trump did.

        @ohiobarbarian:

I am not so sure about the power of the POTUS

anymore. Considering that Trump claims that

he wants to withdraw, but 2 days later changes

his mind. This happened too often, and it leads

me to think that MIC/CIA tell him to get lost,

however in a somewhat face saving way.

I just checked briefly news on RT: Baghdad airport is

on fire after being hit by some rockets. This airport is

supposedly near the embassy and military installations.
