French and German elections also on the horizon.

It takes all the technical proficiency our system can provide to make up for the woeful lack of popular support and political savvy of most of the regimes that the West has thus far sought to prop up.........Bernard Fall

Japan imports more from China than any other country. They import more than twice as much from China than from the US.

They export more to the US than any country, but only slightly more than China.

With the US, Japan runs a big trade surplus. They run a trade deficit with China. (Doesn’t just about everybody?)

But their 2nd largest trading partner are the ASEAN countries, slightly ahead of the US (3rd).

It’s best if Japan stays on good terms everybody, and not take sides.

Taiwan is a pretty big trading partner with Japan, in which Japan runs a nice size surplus.

I don’t think any of these countries want a military conflict in their region, with maybe the exception of the US.

It’s reasonably clear that the global oligarchs who have captured the institutions of power in the United States government, are the chief purveyors of conflict and instability in the world, and are hellbent on keeping their ill-gotten wealth, no matter the cost.

I agree with Mercouris approach and recommendations but don’t think they will be adopted either in Japan or the US.

The LDP elites are far right ideologues. The day Japanese armed forces actively attempt to “defend” Taiwan will mark the beginning of a war not seen since WWII with disastrous consequences for Japan and Taiwan. This is why some LDP leaders advocate arming Japan with nuclear weapons. LDP leaders are detached from reality thinking they can recreate the days of imperial glory in the late 19th century and the first half of the 2oth Century. Their delusional concept of their history and their relative power are dangerous to world peace. The scary part is that the US and UK encourage these delusions, hoping the LDP will pursue its constitutional revision removing limits on offensive military operations. The US, UK, Japan alignment in East Asia today is an analog to the relationship which existed in the early 20th Century which led to repeated wars and ultimately WWII.

The LDP also seeks emergency powers authorization for a “national emergency” that can be equated with the Nazi Enabling Act. It is not so much that Japan is being directed or “strung along” in the wrong direction by the US. It is in fact, a self reinforcing anti-China alliance in which the US (and the UK and Australia) encourage the worst far right inclinations of the LDP leadership and Japan does its utmost to encourage the most militaristic approach possible by the US.
