Once again, certain literary classics are banned from schools because they are “offensive.” When I was in high school we figured out pretty quickly that reading about Huck Finn did not give us permission to refer to black people with the n-word. We realized Huck and his contemporaries used that word because they grew up in racist circumstances. We concluded that Huck liked Jim, and would not have called him “Nigger Jim” if he lived in the 1960s. I guess students today are too dense to have such discussions and reach such conclusions. They will either be irreparably traumatized, or joyfully empowered to be racists, when they read about the protagonist casually using what is now a racial slur. So much for critical thinking.
