They should be protesting the federal government for not passing legislation that would place a giant safety net at the bottom of the fall zone rather than at the bottom of the one or ten percent.
Public health is VERY important. There is no reason that those trillions of dollars of relief bills that passed could not have gone to make sure that everyone had a monthly stipend that would cover at least the $2,000 a month that was bandied around and rejected outright by our oh so caring law makers.
Where the protesters lose me is the over-the-top weaponry brought to intimidate state governments into reopening the business as usual rather than find solutions to the problems of how to put food on the table and keep roofs over people’s heads.
Another sticking point is the fact that so many of the people protesting (in person or online) absolutely refuse to wear protective masks. It is true that wearing the mask does not offer a lot of protection for the mask wearer, but it does offer quite a bit of protection for others around the mask wearer. If we all wear the mask, the rate of Covid 19 transmission goes way down. Not wearing a mask is just pure unaduterated ignorance and selfishness.
Disclaimer: When this started, we had my husband’s social security check (not large, but enough to buy food), a royalty check from last year (probably the last one we get), and we cashed in my husband’s very small 401K and paid off the house. Since I work in the school system in a job that has no benfits whatsoever (other than I can take off as much unpaid time off as I want), my job is gone until the schools reopen (which I really don’t expect for quite some time). I am not facing immediate disaster, but the future doesn’t look very bright…
