They’re going to spend $1 million to remove this stairway up a mountainside. I kinda think they could better spend $1 million housing the homeless or something, but what do I know?

Shouldn’t the US Navy pay for cleanup of an abandoned facility?

Or is it just another case of letting the public pay to clean up someone else’s mess?

…arguing that it’s too dangerous and its influx of visitors is a detriment to the local community.

So, sell tickets and limit the number of visitors per year. Tickets would pay for maintenance. Limiting visitors would cut down on the local annoyance. Removing the stairway won’t stop people. It will only make it more dangerous and detrimental to the habitat. Right now, the stairs are relatively safe (according to the article only one person has died… of a heart attack) and they keep people out of the bush.
