After it was reported Friday that former U.S. President Barack Obama told a room full of “wealthy liberal” Democratic Party donors that voters ultimately won’t go for candidates offering political visions he suggested were too ambitious and radical, progressives online reacted critically to Obama advising the party to sideline “certain left-leaning twitter feeds” and what he termed the “the activist wing of our party.”
    ——–

Sometimes called “Left Twitter” as shorthand, the broad moniker is characterized as Democratic Party members more in the vein of Sanders or those who represent a progressive flank of the spectrum that identify as democratic socialists, progressive Democrats, or left-wing independents. Not an official club that has a membership, any influential—or possibly strident—voices on the progressive left who use social media to share viewpoints and engage with the latest political developments, appeared to be the target of Obama’s warning.

In turn, many who fit the description were not going to let the former president—especially a Democrat who swept to power in 2008 on the campaign promise of “hope and change”—get away with the comments without a characteristic retort. On Saturday, the hashtag #TooFarLeft was trending on Twitter.
    ———-
olitical operative Peter Daou, who took credit for launching the hashtag, said: “I launched the #TooFarLeft tag because I’ve had it with Republicans, media elites, and corporate Dems enabling fascists while denigrating those who seek economic and social justice as ‘too far left.’  I’d like to ONCE hear them complain America is too far right.”

President Barack Obama firmly resists ideological labels, but at the end of a private meeting with a group of moderate Democrats on Tuesday afternoon, he offered a statement of solidarity.

“I am a New Democrat,” he told the New Democrat Coalition, according to two sources at the White House session.

The group is comprised of centrist Democratic members of the House, who support free trade and a muscular foreign policy but are more moderate than the conservative Blue Dog Coalition.

    https://www.politico.com/story/2009/03/obama-i-am-a-new-democrat-019862

In Nov of 2010, New Democrats, because of their refusal to promote any progressive policies whatsoever, lost the House and Senate in landslides, and lost the vast majority of elected state offices, causing Obama to become what was essentially a lame duck President for the last 6 years of his Presidency.

And then Trump was elected, when even some left leaning Americans, totally sick of New Democrat Republican lite milquetoast policies that heavily favored wealthy private interests, refused to vote for the New Democrat chosen candidate, Hillary Clinton.

“The people don’t want a phony Democrat. If it’s a choice between a genuine Republican, and a Republican in Democratic clothing, the people will choose the genuine article, every time; that is, they will take a Republican before they will a phony Democrat.” Harry Truman, 1952

I wonder how much he got for that speech? He cannot be so stupid to think that those of us who are hurting down here love his failures so much that we want another prez like him.

Barack Obama, thy legacy is the porcine peacock currently ensconced in what was once your bedroom. Your deceit and your corruption are what gave a brash flim-flam man a chance of being elected President, because your legacy is one of weakness and betrayal. On the bright side, history will consider you the most skilled of the Vichy Democrats, even as you were the last of them to be President.

I am proud to reclaim my father’s legacy as a supporter of the party of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Henry Wallace, and people like you need to go back to the Republican Party where you belong, if they’ll have you. Well, you joked about Republicans kicking candidates off the island, so it’s kind of karmic, ain’t it?

    Now bugger off.

Just a reminder of the moment when Barry Obama lost ANY credibility he ever had……

    Seriously dude… fuck you!

I didn't refuse to vote for Hillary Clinton because any goddamned Russian told me to. I refused to vote for her because she is a warmongering, election stealing, Goldman Sachs fellating, Republican WHORE. No offense to sex workers.

The only reason he got elected in the first place is because he positioned himself as a transformational “Hope and Change” candidate. If he had campaigned on the way he actually governed he would never have been elected. “Yes, I will make the Bush tax cuts permanent, put social security on the table, and give away a Supreme Court appointment.” That would have never got him in the White House.

Incrementalism and the wishy washy technocrats that promote that crap is what brought us here. If we keep doing what we’ve been doing we’re going to keep getting what we’ve been getting. Which is less and less.

Bullseye! I’ll add to that “No, not only will I not renegotiate NAFTA, I’m going to push, with arm-twisting herculean effort, a much more comprehensive version of NAFTA in all of Asia called the TPP”.

The stupidity of the establishment dems and MSM will result in total failure.  Especially when they keep spewing this shit.

Tens of millions of us will refuse to vote, if Bernie is not the candidate. They won’t have the numbers to win, just like in 2016, and the party will fail AGAIN.

That leaves us with 4 more years of Chump, and at this point in his presidency, I really don’t give a shit. Sooner or later, he will be prosecuted. I certainly hope his narcissism will take him down this time.

So now he reverses his slogan from “Yes, we can!” to:

“No you cannot!”. And the establishment will admonish

us: “He knows more than you do, accept his wisdom.”

It remains to be seen how many Bernie supporters

    will listen to his words.

@sadoldgirl I estimate a negative number, ie if anything, Obama’s blandishments will only send more voters Bernie’s way, and won’t take any away from him. There is little nostalgia in the working classes for Obama. A common refrain among my black coworkers is “We don’t want another Obama.”

It also happens to be mine.

Your coworkers are not for Biden, then? Media keeps pushing lot the narrative of Biden having a demographic…

The polling numbers I’ve seen say that about half of Dems are “good old days” and other half “now the fucking change…”, no idea how trustworthy the poll.

Harry Belafonte prophetically called Obama out when he said something like, “only to walk into the places of power and then, deny us”. In 2005 Harry B said that right to Barry’s and Hillary’s necon faces. Both of them planned at that point on denying everyone but those who could pay.

Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.

I resent the notion that our only choice is between moderately intelligent, technocratic, corporate sellouts the Democrats offer and the blithering idiot, knuckle dragging, corporate sellouts the Republicans foist on the public. This good cop/bad cop scam where identity politics is used by both sides to distract from devastating economic and environmental issues that affect everyone regardless of race, gender, sexual preference, etc. has run its course. Half hearted half measures from spineless Democrat surrender monkeys that capitulate and howl, “We don’t have the votes!” without ever trying get any are a non-starter. When it comes to progressive ambitions you can lead, follow, or get out of the way. Incrementalism is dead.

This is quickly devolving into another Bernie or Bust situation. Establishment Democrats are setting the tone and it looks like people will be left with no viable choices within the Democratic party.

      I’ll never forget that.

And I will never forget that he was the first President in history to put Social Security and Medicare on the table as a bargaining chip to balance the budget.

I’ll never forget that he was responsible for destroying the Occupy Wall Street movement across this country and the abuse and brutality he ordered.

I’ll never forget his complicity in the abuse and brutality of the Standing Rock protesters who were only trying to PEACEFULLY protect WATER.

I’ll never forget how he allowed millions of hard working citizens to lose their homes while he chose to bail out the very crooks on Wall St….with TRILLIONS OF $$$$$$$… who caused our economic collapse in 2008. Not one of them went to jail.

He took us from 2 wars to 7 wars, killing hundreds of thousands of people.

He still has his fans and he always will, but ironically the people who would have been his strongest defenders—if he had only done what he said he’d do—no longer care what he does or thinks.

It’s also why comparatively few are buying into Harris’,Booker’s,Biden’s and Patrick’s similar acts.
