if it weren’t so tragic……………more and more I reflect on the quality of the US education system and to me the multiple ‘morans’ that we laugh at are symptomatic…..
Classic case is an editorial I read in today’s newspaper that argued that Labor Day was a ‘uniquely American’ holiday…….Although one could argue that the first Monday in September and not the recognition of labor celebration is what makes this ‘uniquely American’….but sad to say, there is no reflection on the larger issue of labor rights and what the substance of this holiday means – internationally……………….
And then I think again that maybe it’s my age….But what I fear is that this example is but the tip of the iceberg of a far greater problem…I for one minute do not think that there isn’t talent- universally- in the US…but it’s totally being squandered.
The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.....Martin Luther King '63
It takes all the technical proficiency our system can provide to make up for the woeful lack of popular support and political savvy of most of the regimes that the West has thus far sought to prop up.........Bernard Fall

Apparently many of the graduate students learning to become teachers have real difficulties with basic English. When they had the California Skills Test (if I recall the name correctly) a lot of the students couldn’t pass it. It was to test reading and writing at an 8th grade level . . .

And it seems to defeat everything else too. Why innovate or make something new when you can just repackage old shit and add a higher price tag? Why improve the quality of a drug when you can reduce it dramatically and make more with the same supply?
Why give a damn about doing something kind if it isn’t worth a dollar or fifty?
It is not simply that education has failed – it is that people largely stopped seeing it as anything but a chore. A means to an end – and the end is always money. So much blather I read today about disappointing job reports – with statistics that are so absurd it is laughable – yet you will hear people agonizing about “only” having added some 230 thoysand. Unemployment at 5.2 or something? Total bull shit.
We are lied to about facts and statistics that we then carry with us and pass on even unknowingly. Almost everything seems to be a gimmick to squeeze another dollar out of us.
As an example, McDonald’s recently made a “new” chicken sandwich that their ads and signs displayed proudly. Guess what it was? An unflavored fried chicken Pattie with a small slice of a pickle on it. They took out the tomato, lettuce and mayo and added a tiny pickle slice.
You can still get the old sandwich, only now it is called the “deluxe chicken sandwich” because it has the same ingredients the old “classic” used to.
I have known publishers to take a book that sold millions of copies already – and break it into halves, selling each for the same price as the original. What do they add? Classic art, they call it, a new cover, or a single extra chapter.
It isn’t stupidity that’s ruining us… It is the greed of the powerful. They sit on their fortunes like a dragon hoarding gold.. And all they ever want is more. Not to spend it… Just to make more.

If it isn’t a meme or a tweet, or a headline, why read it? I wish i was kidding.
Reading requires imagination investments of time and effort. Besides, won’t we be able to download that stuff into our brains with neuralink?
It is not so much that people are lazy. Rather, Americans, at least, generally speaking, are very tired.

Kate Brown, the governor of Oregon, recently removed the requirement to be able to read and write to get a high school diploma as
racistdisproportionally affecting the disadvantaged.
I see basic English mistakes in newspapers – they pass spell check, but not quite the same as knowing what you’re writing.
