In the ‘60s, protesters burned bras. In 2020, they might soon be burning masks.

Views on how to respond to the coronavirus pandemic have become increasingly polarized, yet another political issue that for many culture war combatants is filtered through an ideological lens. The left has been almost uniformly — and loudly — in favor of sacrificing many personal liberties in exchange for containing the virus’ spread. The right has been divided, but the vocal activist wing of conservatism that has enormous influence on social media and Fox News, has been far more willing to attack the various infringements on where people can go and what they have to wear.

The mask has become the ultimate symbol of this new cultural and political divide.

For progressives, masks have become a sign that you take the pandemic seriously and are willing to make a personal sacrifice to save lives. Prominent people who don’t wear them are shamed and dragged on Twitter by lefty accounts. On the right, where the mask is often seen as the symbol of a purported overreaction to the coronavirus, mask promotion is a target of ridicule, a sign that in a deeply polarized America almost anything can be politicized and turned into a token of tribal affiliation.

The cleavage was made clear this week when Mike Pence toured the Mayo Clinic without wearing a mask. Pictures from the event showed the maskless vice president surrounded by doctors and patients with face coverings. The story dominated cable news. Liberal hosts shamed Pence for setting a bad example or behaving recklessly. Conservatives attacked the left’s mask obsession as another example of the creeping nanny state.

Laura Ingraham warned that “social control over large populations is achieved through fear and intimidation and suppression of free thought” and “conditioning the public through propaganda is also key, new dogmas replace good old common sense.”

Some people seem as worked up about face coverings as others are about tax policy or abortion. In response to a recent POLITICO report about the Pence imbroglio, one person on Twitter wrote, “Get over it, I don’t wear a mask either and I NEVER WILL!”

this is all that matters in this entire fucking clusterfuck:

masks have become a sign that you take the pandemic seriously and are willing to make a personal sacrifice to save lives.

It’s that simple. Moralizing is irrelavent

But it’s true that most conservatives do not take it seriously. They maintain that this was an overreaction designed to hurt Trump.

Many libertarians are comparing all this to Nazi Germany saying that “our civil liberties are evaporating.” Go to their blogs and it’s all about Big Brother and Orwell right now.

Then you have Dennis Prager comparing himself to Rosa Parks.

It’s such a small sacrifice, and might actually help keep the number of cases from exploding and thus help keep businesses open.

Destruction is easy; creation is hard, but more interesting.

It’s like their leaders sit around thinking up absolutely fucking stupid shit to tell them, just to see if they’ll go along with it.

At this point, I don’t care if they get sick and die. They’ve been warned for months. I care that the fucking idiots will spread it to innocents.

I can’t write ‘FUCK!’ enough times to express how much this pisses me off. Here at JPR we bang on Dems/Liberals a lot, and they deserve it. But when it comes to outright stupidity, to sheer dimwitted dumbfuckery, nobody in the fucking world beats the republican base.

Right now, if you have access to one it is common sense to wear it. Businesses have a right to do what they can to protect their customers – and some are making masks mandatory. The local Walgreens has a mandatory mask policy. If you go in without one, you are told to leave.

Of course there are places where you wont be able to, like if you are eating at a restaurant.

The fact that some people are getting violent over this is ridiculous. No one is saying you have to wear a mask at all times, but businesses and public places have rules. If you dont follow them, you dont benefit from them. Wearing a mask for a bit isnt going to hurt anyone.

Not wearing one is your choice – but not on a store with a sign that clearly says they are mandatory.

The fact that the tea party fox news crowd is so crazy about this only further proves how stupid they really are.

Which is the purpose of wearing the mask in public in the first place.

We are an arrogant species, believing our fantasy based "facts" are better than the other person's fake facts.
If you are wrong, it will be because you are not cynical enough.

@retiredliberal

It says so, right there in the article, along with others I’ve read about this, also.

This is a propaganda piece being used by the people that don’t want to wear a mask in public. I was exposed to this very same article a few day ago by one like that.

whatever you think about the study (i have concerns re virus on the outside only), masks of any type clearly reduce viral load:

“The median viral loads of nasopharyngeal and saliva samples from the 4 participants were 5.66 log copies/mL and 4.00 log copies/mL, respectively.

The median viral loads after coughs without a mask, with a surgical mask, and with a cotton mask were 2.56 log copies/mL, 2.42 log copies/mL, and 1.85 log copies/mL, respectively.

http://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/viral-load-converting-log-values-to-numbers

All swabs from the outer mask surfaces of the masks were positive for SARS–CoV-2, whereas most swabs from the inner mask surfaces were negative (Table).”

They will happily submit to “groin area searches” and whatever other unnecessary humiliation because they think they are being protected from a terrorist attack…a virtually non-existent threat. But wearing a mask to protect yourself and others from a very clear and present danger that is literally killing thousands of Americans every day is somehow “tyranny”.

I swear these people in 1944 London be like: “The Germans are a hoax! I’m turning on the lights!”

Corporatism is the legal fiction that property can be people.
