• Update on weirdness

Update on site issues: (1. replies now need a title *and* something in the message box, 2. certain links are causing strange pop-ups on Apple devices, and 3. Some folks can't type anything into the text box.) Basically, a series of unfortunate events set us back on testing. We'll get to it as soon as we can, and hopefully things can get fixed by this weekend if not before.  More info: https://jackpineradicals.com/boards/topic/site-problems-more-info/

My access has been limited?I just got this message:

Your access to this site has been limited
Your access to this service has been temporarily limited. Please try again in a few minutes. (HTTP response code 503)

Reason: Exceeded the maximum global requests per minute for crawlers or humans.

Important note for site admins: If you are the administrator of this website note that your access has been limited because you broke one of the Wordfence blocking rules. The reason your access was limited is: “Exceeded the maximum global requests per minute for crawlers or humans.”.

If this is a false positive, meaning that your access to your own site has been limited incorrectly, then you will need to regain access to your site, go to the Wordfence “options” page, go to the section for Rate Limiting Rules and disable the rule that caused you to be blocked. For example, if you were blocked because it was detected that you are a fake Google crawler, then disable the rule that blocks fake google crawlers. Or if you were blocked because you were accessing your site too quickly, then increase the number of accesses allowed per minute.

If you’re still having trouble, then simply disable the Wordfence advanced blocking and you will still benefit from the other security features that Wordfence provides.

If you are a site administrator and have been accidentally locked out, please enter your email in the box below and click “Send”. If the email address you enter belongs to a known site administrator or someone set to receive Wordfence alerts, we will send you an email to help you regain access. Please read this FAQ entry if this does not work.

    3. I've been on a forum where you get locked out for opening too many tabs*

Maybe JPR has this as a rule if/when they are getting hammered. I’ve had lots of JPR tabs open in the past, without getting any notices.

*It was called “flood control”, IIRC.

      5. I usually have more tabs open, but lately I have been

better. The computer has been yelling at me when I binge.

      6. If that's the case, I'd like to know

It’s not all that unusual I will have 20 tabs opened, save them because my old laptop is out of memory when I need to do something else, then I’ll re-open the tab-set later. Does that practice put too much load on a site?

        7. The number of open tabs should be meaningless, unless they keep refreshing

A open tab is just an expression of what’s in your browser’s history, unless the open tab has dynamic content. But even then that would likely just be from advertisements, not served from the site’s server. I think. :) Since JPR doesn’t have ads/dynamic content, that’s not a concern.

No, what causes some sites to get “nervous” is when you load up many tabs all at once. I sometimes approach doing that when I come back to JPR, and start loading up threads from the list of “LATEST” posts.

Doing something basically the same as that on another forum is what got me the “flood control” warning on that other forum. If I didn’t see the warning, and opened another tab, I got locked out for an hour. And if I missed seeing that one and opened another tab, I got locked out for 24 hours. These weren’t pop-up warnings, they’d be embedded into the page of the tab.

          12. Thanks, that makes sense

It seems that when I reload a tab-set in Chrome, it is getting the pages from the browser’s cache, and I don’t get the latest comments in the thread until I reload the page. I don”t reload the individual pages until I actually read them, so no problem.
