She was 86. She lived a long life, but it was often a tough life, because she was abandoned by her husband when we kids were young, and she had to raise us by herself, at a time when it was particularly difficult for single mothers.
“There’s a new spirit abroad in the land. The old days of ‘grab and greed’ are on their way out. We’re beginning to think of what we owe the other fellow, not just what we’re compelled to give him. The time’s coming… when we shan’t be able to fill our bellies in comfort while others go hungry, sleep in warm beds while others shiver in the cold.... And God willing, we’ll live to see that day…” Basil Rathbone,"Sherlock Holmes Faces Death" (Universal 1943)

I’m so sorry to hear this Art. Your Mom sounds like a hero, good on her!! My best to you and your family.

She spent her last working years working for a charity, helping others, including the mother of one of my former classmates.

It’s such a tough, cold and confusing time for anything, and to think your mother has left… I am so sorry for your loss.
I still believe (as with my own mom) that they are within our hearts and truly never leave. I still feel my mom’s presence in time of deep thought.
I hope that you can properly be comforted at this time. Hugs to you and your family.
Hell, no... I'm not giving up...

My kids are planning to visit me next week to console me. They’re really good kids, even if they’re both adults now.

Judging from what I know of you – just your posts, but often we can tell more from that than actually meeting someone – your mother was a wonderful person and mother.

She said that she had voted for John F. Kennedy, even though she had cast her first presidential vote for Eisenhower. Both of her parents were Republicans, and in those days, she had led me to believe that she was a Republican, too. But she was afraid to let on to her parents she didn’t agree with their political beliefs. But she did support Winthrop Rockefeller’s bid for the governorship of Arkansas in 1966, because “Winrock” was more progressive than his Democratic opponent. This was right after the Faubus era. “Winrock” won, and was governor for the next 4 years. He was probably the only truly progressive Republican governor the state has ever had. Certainly better than what we have now.

She spent her last working years working for a charity. There wasn’t much money in that, but she helped a LOT of people, and I was so proud of her for that.

Your Mom was heroic. The world certainly is a poorer place without her.
Not much comfort in this, but you were extremely lucky to have such a great Mom for so long. Sadly, I have friends who weren’t so lucky, in the quality of their Mom or the length of time they had them. Not much comfort, I know. But it helped me when I lost my Mom a couple of years ago to remember how lucky I had been in comparison with my less fortunate friends.
Sending courage and comfort, brother. Peace

Sorry for the loss of your mother, Art. I really didn’t understand how valuable our mother was until she was gone. It is funny, but one of her favorite old sayings was, “You’ll never miss the water till the well runs dry.” She loved those old sayings.
I would like to remind you that U.S. health insurance companies do not contribute anything to health care. They are only a PARASITIC middle man receiving an undeserved cut of "FREE MONEY".

I wasn’t able to travel back to the US for the funeral because of this corona crap. And if I had gone back to the US, and arrived back in Japan on March 26 or later, I would have had to spend 14 days in “self-quarantine” in Japan.

The time in which we are living is horrible, it inflicts unimaginable pain and suffering. The most common, ordinary rituals/customs are now out of reach. Try to reflect on the good times you had with your mom and the relationship you had over her lifetime. Truly, that is what matters.
What is happening now is out of your control. You did your best. Peace.

I tried to spend as much time as possible with my mom whenever I visited her, which was usually 2 times a year, even though that cost me a lot of money in air fare and lost wages. And I take solace that all 6 of her grandchildren were able to see her before she passed away, including her two grandkids in Japan.
