Michael Duitsman, with the US-based James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS), said it appeared to be the largest single test ever by North Korea.

A large number of missiles also suggests a military drill or show of force, rather than a test of new technology.

The latest volley comes after South Korean and US ships concluded three days of drills in international waters off the Japanese island of Okinawa, including air defence, anti-ship, anti-submarine, and maritime interdiction operations.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the exercises, included the USS Ronald Reagan, a 100,000-ton nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, “consolidated the two countries’ determination to sternly respond to any North Korean provocations”.

      N. Korea fires 8 short-range ballistic missiles toward East Sea: S. Korean military

      14:26 June 05, 2022

SEOUL, June 5 (Yonhap) — North Korea fired eight short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) toward the East Sea on Sunday, a day after South Korea and the United States wrapped up their joint drills near the peninsula involving a U.S. aircraft carrier, according to the South’s military.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the launches were detected between 9:08 a.m. and 9:43 a.m. from areas around Sunan in Pyongyang; Kaechon, north of the capital city; the northwestern region of Tongchang-ri; and the eastern city of Hamhung.

The missiles flew around 110-670 kilometers at altitudes of 25-90 km with speeds of Mach 3 to 6, it added.

On May 21, Yoon and Biden agreed to expanded military exercises and the return of US “strategic assets” to the region. A US ROK Navy combined naval military exercise is conducted near Okinawa and US strategic bombers are deployed to Guam. The next day after each, North Korea launches missiles. What’s next, “fire and fury?”
