Name one piece of legislation that helps the people.

With very few of exceptions, I cannot find a bill introduced in Congress that actually helps the people in the last 10 years. Most of those exceptions are bills introduced by Bernie Sanders.

I do know there are a few. But none passed. Some never made it to a vote.

In the 2018 election I think we need to take a hard look at who did not introduce or cosponsor good legislation. That is in addition to who never has introduced or voted for legislation that would actually help the people

          14. I was going to say Obamacare, but a big part of that

was subsidizing the donors. How far did you want to go back? Never mind, you said 10 years.

            36. It's been much longer than that

Legislation that does anything to improve our lives has been missing for decades. Everything is about making more profit for the wealthy.

Yes, Obama care is just another subsidy for insurance companies. It’s really obvious by the increased profits for the insurance companies and the unnecessary deaths of the poor and middle class.

Our infant mortality rate just continues to get worse

      3. The pre-existing conditions part of the otherwise shit Obamacare bill.

        4. Yes, that part of it was probably the best part

        Or close to it anyway.

On a whole though, the ACA helps insurance companies.

But I’ll count it. It did get people insurance that otherwise wouldn’t have it. And the preexisting condition part was fantastic

            11. The former head of the that bureau is now running for governor of Ohio. I'm

pretty sure he was frustrated by the lack of things that he could actually do.

              24. It helps, just not as much as it should. At least it was moving

towards the side of the public, not away. Yes, like much of your supposed left, it is weak sauce compared to what we have here in Sweden, etc, but it still was something attempting to help.

Your nation is super RW fucked up, so I am being generous when assigning positive governmental actions over the last 10 years.

In reality, I have little to no hope for the US for decades if Bernie doesn’t win the POTUS in 2020. Really sucks to have all your eggs in one basket, but here we are.

Dog eat dog brutal capitalism/greed, an obsession with violence, and an insane penetration level of the ultimate deadly (in so so many ways) and stupifying woo that is religion are 3 barriers that may not be able to be overcome.

                56. Robert Reich said on his book tour

In Berkeley that we will not make through to 2020 if we continue on the same course. That was in December 2015.

Edit. He said probably. But he said, assuming we stay on the same economic course, we will not survive past the 2020 election.

Since things are actually worse than they were in 2015, it we make it to 2020 and do not elect Bernie Sanders or at least someone much like him, our country is done

                  76. We Should Inquire about Getting Robert Reich to Speak at the People's Summit

I think a moderated talk with him, Bernie, Jane, and Amy Goodman would be interesting.   This would be a good topic for them.

      5. Nothing springs to mind. What does that say…

      …about our legislators?

I know the whole ObamaCare package was sold to us as “beneficial”, but I feel that huge corporations benefited from it more than the citizenry.

I haven’t finished my first pot of coffee yet this morning, so maybe I’ll think of something once I’m functioning fully.

          31. I was thinking about

          • listing all legislative attempts (description),
          • Who benefited or would have benefited,
          • How far they got through the process,
          • who authored/sponsored/co-sponsored
          • who opposed
          • date initiated
          • ??
          • ?
          • etc etc etc

just a thought. You may be right – there arent that many worth listing

      10. And the fact that we need to dig so hard

to find any beneficial legislation only highlights Democratic failure to promote any good policy enacted, or to let citizens in on Congressional happenings, so we can add our voices to the process.  “It shouldn’t be this hard”, is why we continue to lose the power of public opinion.

      19. This was the question Thom Hartmann used to ask of his listeners

about Republicans, ‘name one piece of legislation sponsored by Republicans and made into law that significantly benefited the middle and lower classes and not the wealthy’ and no one could find anything for about the last 40 years. Democrats can be included for the last 20 or 30 years. There may be good legislation introduced, but none of that ever gets into law. The Inauthentic Opposition Party can always rely on those mean Rethugnicons to block anything good for us little people.

Anything that this Congress and Administration enacts today is going to be a destructive retrogression to the Gilded Age.  The last decade has been mostly about going backwards to before FDR.

We need a new New Deal.  But, we aren’t going to get one in the foreseeable future under the present political duopoly and economic kleptocracy.   Aside from core entitlements, the federal government has all but ceased to serve any purpose other than as an upward conveyor belt for wealth to the 1%.

How about the Lilly Ledbetter Act?

      https://www.eeoc.gov/eeoc/publications/brochure-equal_pay_and_ledbetter_act.cfm

Is that more than 10 years ago. Has it helped, is anyone enforcing it? Apparently it doesn’t apply to the Clinton Foundation.

And let’s look at one thing that was not done by Obama, which was promised. That was card check.

        28. He had the ability and made the promise to institute the card check system

of union organizing and he threw over the unions.

To organize a union you first have to get a majority of workers you wish to organize to sign show of interest cards and then petition the federal authority to hold an election: Time and money consuming. Then if you and the workers win, your ability to negotiate a contract is subject to various challenges and appeals: Again, time and money consuming.

With card check, you are presumed to have a union and can begin negotiations subject to court review. It’s much more worker and union friendly and less expensive. The workers themselves have less exposure to retaliation.

            30. You're welcome. I went through the process of organizing (and winning)

and it left us in the hole financially. Management has tax deductible lawyers and support staff, if you’re indy like we were, then nothing is tax deductible because you hire the law firm and pay them.  I wish we had card check because it would have been over and done with very quickly and cheaply.

              33. Great to hear about your sucess

                34. Sounds like we've both had experience although it's been from different

sides. Thanks for letting me know.

One drawback about the slowness of the system is that it allows management to put continued pressure on the workers not to organize. It’s tough to choose between organizing and your job. With the card check system, you can hit management with a completed campaign before they are fully aware of the nature and extent of the progress unionization has made.

Although we achieved most of our goals, the toll on workers was hard for some to bear. As president, I had the say on the involvement of the law firm to assist members so I knew what each one with a work related issue was going through.  We won the majority by far but sometimes a person just snaps and no matter the amount of assistance he/she got, the case wasn’t winnable and that was tough on all involved.

A revitalized union movement, which I believe card check would have meant, would change the whole climate of the country for the better. Big box stores would be a likely target for success and it would save tax payers money too. But, money won.

      27. If it has a good effect for us, the price is better effect for rich

Healthcare reform was a case in point.

The best option would have been single payer or a national health service, which would have put health insurance companies out of business.

Instead, we gave those companies healthy new customers with the mandate.

There was good stuff in the bill like expanding Medicaid and standardizing insurance options, but the price was keeping for profit insurance in the game.

It would be nice to have legislators who are willing to say we cannot trust for profit businesses to act in the best interests of their customers or the American people as a whole in some areas.  In those areas, the government has a duty to deliver those services just as we already do with defense, police, fire departments, and many other essential services.

      42. I was thinking along those lines today but instead asked

      myself the question:

“What has been better in the average person’s life since the Reagan presidency began destroying our safety net?”

And I couldn’t think of a single thing. I’m talking about the Clinton and Obama presidencies too. We still have institutionalized homelessness. After doing our best to end the Vietnam War find ourselves even deeper in endless wars against the world. Wages are not living wages and have not kept up with the cost of living. Getting an education without descending into permanent debt is impossible for the average person.

Poverty is increasing to the point that we are starting to look like a third world nation. Our elections are less reliable than most banana republics. Our most honored job in the nation, the presidency, has become a clown job instead of sought by grifters from parties as a joke it seems to further the agendas of international crime syndicates. Our health system is the worst in the world of developed nations, not the best as propaganda would have you believe.

Nothing good has been done for the nation since LBJ. The average working class American can’t get ahead because they are constantly having their pockets picked by the commercial interests they can’t avoid like banking, health care, insurance etc..

      52. I'm not so sure how to quantify this question.

Most legislation is fairly broad in scope and there are large chinks of nearly every one of them that may actually ‘help’ the people. The question is going to be very hard to answer directly as a result.

And I have an issue with how we determine who to ‘sponsor’. It would seem to me that a large (very large even) percentage of the democrats currently in office are not even close to being progressive. So this brings up the fact that we would be more inclined to advocate for a replacement, a lot of whom may have zero legislative experience and no record to examine.

The other problem is someone actually being able to introduce legislation. They can’t just walk up and barf it onto the floor for consideration. That being the case, how do we know that they didn’t actually WANT to present bills to help the people and got shot down before they could even get going.

Shouldn’t we also examine the no votes as much as the yes votes and/or legislation introduced?

And here is something else I find interesting after thinking about this for a couple of days. Given the track record of taking everything from the lower 40 or 50 percent of the population, how come turnover in congress is virtually non-existent? For either party?

        67. Yes, we should track the votes as well

But no, it’s not that difficult. Regardless of how much crap is thrown into a piece of legislation, it’s pretty easy to tell if anyone has benefited that was not part of the upper 10% of the wealthy.

Sponsoring and cosponsoring does make a difference.

              87. Son of a bitch but would it be nice for you to have the net back.

I don’t understand how you can keep from blowing up at someone over this. I’da been steaming a long time ago. Probably wouldn’t have done any good, but at least it would feel good to vent the shit outta someone.

I think this is more important than anything else when looking at candidates. That and if they take corporate blood money

      86. Legislation that helps people is not beneficial to corporate oligarchy.

If the US was some sort of democracy, I expect we’d see lots of legislation that helped people.

Unfortunately, we live in a corporate oligarchy, where legislation that helps corporations and oligarchs is the type of legislation that the oligarch owned legislators draft, and pass.  Because they are acts of class warfare, they call malicious legislation that harms the 99% “victories”

          92. We will have to engage in mass non-violent direct action to stop it.

              105. Great topic

Great question, topic, got me thinking. Know its been a while since how legislation becomes law, remember parts of process but been a while sine the 90s since following something along, to see it come about (come to think of it that was a law, now got me to wonder if that is difference from legislation) but above, how or who benefits, what drives it,all good stuff.
