But I grew up in PA. Trying to find plain old sauerkraut, unaldulterated by added sugar is difficult. (Besides, my family refuses to be in the same house as fermented cabbage.) Hog jowls sounds dreadful. We don’t care for collard greens, and black-eyed peas are okay if they are in something like hoppin john.
So I made my own tradition: black-eyed peas simmered in tomatos, onion, and green peppers for an hour or three, and at the last minute, I put in fresh baby spinach leaves. For my husband and son, I add ham since they eat meat.
But my car broke down over Christmas (starter) and I forgot to shop for the necessary ingredients… If the stores are all out of black-eyed peas (as they usually are), this year the tradition is out the window. Maybe a salad for me and hamburgers for my family?

Yeah, I know it’s a Quebecois dish, but the Smoke’s Poutinerie near my house had a line out the door today, so I figured it was a thing. 🙂
