      Yep. And Fedex told them to change the name, so the order has come down from Corporate HQ.

      Let’s be clear here. I think the name should be changed for the reason I’ll give below, but neither Fedex nor Nike give a shit about Native American feelings or Black Lives Matter. If they did, the Redskins would have been something else for the last 50 years. This is posturing to placate their upper middle class liberal customers who spend the most money on their stuff. Of course, the latter will crow about what good corporate citizens Fedex and Nike are, and you’re just rude if you mention their working conditions and low pay, which is exactly what Corporate wants them to do.

      For liberals, it’s always the symbolism that’s important, not the substance. They don’t want to think about the substance, because most of them make their money off of it, and then they couldn’t feel so virtuous.

      I suppose the same can be said of most sports fans. They always rant and rave when their team’s emblem or mascot has changed just because that’s what they’re used to. Tradition! Whoever named the Redskins that probably got the idea from Western movies back in the day when Indians were all played by white actors and told whitewashed historical stories. They didn’t know the other, original meaning of the term that appeared in bounty posters.

      When that history was relearned by many white people, the name of the football team should have been changed then. Like in 1970. 50 years is long enough, so whatever the reason for the change now, it’s about damned time.

      I guess they can actually do something decent once a century or so?

      Of course then the other shoe (pardon the bad pun) will drop, and Phil Knight will expect the team to change its name to the “Washington Nikes”.

      @satan

      and then you wouldn’t be offending the MIC….But then again, why not just call them the Washington Lobbyists and cover all the bases.

      You would EXPECT them to cheat even more than the New England Patriots!

      @satan The Raiders used to be the most admirable team when it came to guile. It’s been the Patriots lately, but now Belichek and Brady are somewhere in Florida where I’ll never go, which is kind of fitting, when you think of the 2000 election and the more recent shenanigans by DWS down there.

      Have their mascot be Duke from Dunesberry.

      Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben are both black. Did anyone black object? How about sports team names derived from the American Indians? I remember one case when the white PC crowd wanted a sports team to change their name, but someone had the audacity to consult with the tribe helping support that sports team named for them. The name did not get changed.

      What I am trying to get at, there is nothing wrong with non-white people being logos on products. People of all colors and races make up our culture. So why is is OK for depiction of white people OK, but somehow non-white, not? After all, non-Caucasians have their history and culture in this country also. Why can’t they be included as logos too?
      I see that as a larger picture of erasing our own sordid history. Without history, people repeat the mistakes of past events. It is one thing to ban flags from public display, but entirely another to ban symbols and objects of other cultures. While certain flags and statues should be in museums or maybe gathered in specially named parks, with proper, truthful descriptions on plaques by them, instead of being destroyed, so we do not forget our own history of genocide, racism and deceit.

      @retiredliberal

      between racial stereotype logos that perpetuate white supremacy and product ownership.   Uncle Ben’s is owned by Mars

      and Aunt Jemima is owned by Quaker Oats.

      We aren’t talking about police brutality anymore,we’re talking about statues and advertising trademarks and the names of sports teams.
