There is a debate about what to do with a huge mural in the restaurant of a British museum. The mural depicts the English gentry on a hunt for exotic creatures. It includes two images of a black boy being led or dragged by a rope around his neck. It’s obviously racist, right? Any reference to black people in slavery or captivity is racist. Not so fast. A little checking on the artist, Rex Whistler, reveals that he specialized in satire. Could he have been trying to make a point or take a jab at the British aristocracy? Doesn’t matter. Nobody gets satire. Ask Randy Newman or Frank Zappa. (I linked an older article instead of the more recent NYT piece because pay wall)

I think it is important to remember our history. I think satire is mostly a waste of time these days because of all the crazy shit that really ought to be satire but is actually true. Nothing against it personally, but you will find many articles these days from mainstream media that immediately make one wonder if it is the onion.
Many, many people simply do not have the fortitude to face harsh truth. Satire (if it is any good) subtly points it out in an often humorous way. Yet it also makes many uncomfortable. They don’t want to be confronted by ugly images, stories, or honest critical analysis.
For many of us, our mental health and even our careers require us to either lie to ourselves constantly – or to avoid any acknowledgement of how screwed up things really are.
Satire is also tough these days – because it is damn hard (unless a piece is from the onion or something) to recognize truth at all.
Ignorance, cowardice, shame. Self justifications galore for any number of things.

Or because they are the breast invention ever? Or is that too sexist?
Pun are good. They give you a chance to get away, while the recipient is trying to figure it out.
