Noam Chomsky’s Bold Request Before President Obama Leaves Office (Video)

*If Obama would do it, there would be no better way to rebuke a Trump/birther presidency.

“We should join to urge [Obama] to carry out this necessary step without delay,” Noam Chomsky tells Americans. (YouTube)

“President Obama, to his credit, has issued personal pardons in deserving cases, but he should go far beyond,” Chomsky stated.

On December 19, just weeks before leaving office, President Obama pardoned 78 people and shortened the sentences of 153 other prisoners. The recipients were all non-violent, low level drug offenders deserving of a second chance. In total, President Obama has pardoned 1,000 individuals since taking office; more than 50 times that of George W. Bush.

Chomsky then dared the president to set a new record.

“He should proceed to what is, in fact, an urgent necessity, to grant a general pardon to 11 million people who are living and working [in America], productive citizens… threatened with deportation by the incoming administration,” Chomsky insisted.

    1. I used to really respect Chomsky.

Now I just have a hard time when he pushes stupid shit like this.

A very simple bit of research on the facts would have shown him that Obama can not do this.

    1. Illegal immigration is a civil not criminal offense — http://blogs.findlaw.com/blotter/2014/07/is-illegal-immigration-a-crime-improper-entry-v-unlawful-presence.html  The only part that is is ‘illegal entry’ which is a misdemeanor usually covered by scant if any jail time (less than six months) and a small fine.

    2. Presidents can only pardon criminal offenses not civil ones — http://immigrationreform.com/2016/11/22/can-obama-pardon-illegal-aliens/  Even if he pardoned the illegal entry, it would not change anything but all of the other issues are civil not criminal.

I used to think those of us on the left were critical thinkers but apparently emotionality is the norm today.

When you hear people raising reasoned objections to Trump’s policies and appointments, odds are that you’re listening to the sort of thoughtful dissent that’s essential to any semblance of democracy, and it may be worth taking seriously. When you hear people criticizing Trump and his appointees for doing the same thing his rivals would have done, or his predecessors did, odds are that you’re getting the normal hypocrisy of partisan politics, and you can roll your eyes and stroll on. But when you hear people shrieking that Donald Trump is the illegitimate result of a one-night stand between Ming the Merciless and Cruella de Vil, that he cackles in Russian while barbecuing babies on a bonfire, that everyone who voted for him must be a card-carrying Nazi who hates the human race, or whatever other bit of over-the-top hate speech happens to be fashionable among the chattering classes at the moment—why, then, dear reader, you’re hearing a phenomenon as omnipresent and unmentionable in today’s America as sex was in Victorian England. You’re hearing the voice of class bigotry: the hate that dare not speak its name.  -- John Michael Greer

    2. Does Chomsky fear that the incarcerated will be executed instead of being

deported?  Perhaps the next administration, seeing productive citizens working freely, could move to incarcerate a slave labor force just for being here illegally.

Are we looking at work camps and slavery where one works to pay for their fare back to their country of origin or work for the immigration fee to become a citizen?  What will Trump do?
