    @davidthegnome

I have been cutting back my time at JPR and other political forums lately – mostly for the benefit of my own mental health, as a lot of it has been depressing, just terrible.  The more I read through the news topics of the day, the headlines, the comments – and so on and so forth, the more I come to believe that there is only one person currently in the running that is fighting for the people of this Country.  Perhaps two – but Gabbard’s chances of victory are very, very low.

In any event, back in 2016 the people of America had an opportunity.  An opportunity to abandon business as usual, to elect a President who, honestly, has been saying and doing all of the right things for decades.  A man who, over and over again, has denounced the big banks, the oil companies, military intervention, oligarchy, the 1%.  Anyone who doesn’t see the way things are (and the way they have been going) for decades now, just isn’t paying attention.  Worker productivity has gone way up – while wages stagnate.  Most of the good jobs are gone to Countries that offer cheaper labor, most of our factories are likewise gone.  Of particular concern here in Maine, too, is that we have one remaining mill in my neck of the woods – and I expect it won’t last much longer.

Public transportation for much of the Country is nonexistent.  People who need medications as common as insulin are being charged hundreds of dollars more than they could afford – every month.  People are dying for want of medicine, people are suffering for want of food and warmth – a story, perhaps, as old as time, yet it need not be so – and in fact, should never be so in anything that can be considered even vaguely democratic, especially given the overall wealth of the Country.  So how has it come to this?  That trillions are spent on military funding – that hundreds of billions now, every year, pay for mercenary forces to occupy Countries like Iraq or Afghanistan?  Infrastructure is failing – and nearly every single one of our National institutions has either been hopelessly corrupted – or is well on its way there.

Trump is the epitome… the “big bang” that is the result of decades of terrible, idiotic, heartless political and overall leadership.  He is all about the “everyone for themselves”, “pull yourselves up by your bootstraps!” bull shit mentality.  Those of his followers who are among his true believers (and there are a good number) are practically worshipping at his altar.  It is the result of endless, extreme greed, corruption, ignorance… and despair.  Despair from many who believe everything is finished, that democracy is a lie, that there really is no hope for the future.  Perhaps Trump attacks their favorite scape goats – Muslims, immigrants, African Americans, liberals… the media…

Now… out of all of our current Presidential hopefuls… which one, has, for a number of years now, been fighting for a system of healthcare that lets everyone get treated AND get their medicine without going bankrupt?  Which one has refused to back away from such a system, despite overwhelming opposition from the corporate/political world?  Which one is proposing – not to further privatize and monetize our Universities, but to offer them free of charge?  Which one has vowed to cancel all standing student debt?  Which one is it that has been honest and forthright about taxing the rich… for decades?  Which one has dared, also, to criticize our international sanctions and economic bullying of most of the world?

In case you haven’t already figured it out – that’s Bernie Sanders.  Incorruptible, brave, honest.  A man of integrity and principle who actually values such things.  In 2016, hundreds of thousands of voters (that we know of) were purged from primaries – and I don’t think it would be a stretch to suggest that most of those votes were for Bernie.  Hundreds of thousands of registrations either did not “register” or registered incorrectly.  That’s just the electronic stuff, who knows how many paper ballots went missing, or were simply destroyed?

The usual players…. and their wealthy masters, have defeated our good leaders, our heroes, over and over again.  Some times they go out of their way to disgrace them in public, even getting well liked civil servants and civil rights heroes to attack them.  Some times they simply kill them (JFK, RFK, Martin Luther King), some times they simply rig an entire primary system to deny a place to anyone who might challenge them.  All of this and more has happened – and will happen again.

Nonetheless, given the current global economic situation – the buildup to war with several different Nations, the out of control military spending (and pay special attention to private military forces – as these will fight the majority of future wars), climate change and much else… our best chance is not someone who sugar coats bull shit or puts lipstick on a pig.  Our best chance at resistance, at fighting back, is to elect a person who has principles that matter, who has integrity, who does not stab their friends in the back, or bow to corporate forces.

As far as I am concerned, America’s best chance at remaining a Nation and not imploding due to the madness and stupidity of its leaders… is to pick new leaders.  The buck stops with the President – Perhaps we should elect the one who is most like we are, the one who is sick and tired of the lies.  The one who wants to make a better America – and a better world.  No promises to make America great again, or whole again – but a promise to give everyone healthcare, hell, that alone, would be enough for me.

Sanders would not only be a great President – but would also serve as inspiration for millions of a people in a time when hope is in short supply.  I believe that if Biden or Trump claim 2020, our Country will enter its final years.  Given how large and influential, militarily and economically, that America is, I believe our fall, if and when it comes, will trigger a domino effect, collapsing, for all intents and purposes, many other Nations as well.  When that happens, when there is no deterrent to people even worse than Trump who have nuclear weapons – when there is no UN or anything else to even pretend to care about biological weapons, we will enter the age of dystopia.

As far as I am concerned, Bernie Sanders is America’s best chance – and our last.  If we needed proof that time is running out, look to Australia, look to Iran, look to the rise of corporate greed, the lowering of taxes for the wealthiest of us, the cost being paid for life saving drugs.  Hell, just look at the big picture, in any way.  Without change, our civilization will die.

Keep the faith man, I honestly believe Bernie is going to win 2020.  None of their dirty tricks are working – and that, more than anything else, gives me hope.  Our numbers are growing.

@davidthegnome Bernie really can win this time. Even Chris Matthews, who on Jeopardy! said Jesus was born in Nazareth instead of Bethlehem, sees that. Joe Scarborough went so far as to say he thought Bernie was going to win the nomination. They said this not because they want to see Bernie win, but because they see the same things we do.

A good, well-organized political campaign that doesn’t take any shit. A record number of small donations and small donors giving what little they can to the campaign of a politician they know they can trust because or his record, which goes back before many of them were even born. Teachers, postal workers, Amazon employees, Wal-Mart employees, fast food employees, enlisted military members. In short, the working class is rallying around one candidate and We Are Legion.

Then there’s AOC, who had the nerve to start her own PAC, Courage for Change, to directly challenge the corporatist DCCC. Make no mistake, we are in the middle of a political civil war to determine who controls the Democratic Party for the next generation, and we are winning it. All we have to do is to keep pushing, to keep doing whatever each of us can, and we will win.

In the end, it’s really not about Bernie. It really is about us.

Amen.  I am reminded of my vague recollections of one of Gandhi’s (recorded) speeches.  Something about how thousands cannot rule over millions.  In this case, its a few hundred trying to rule over 300 million – not to mention their global interests.  Yep, one way or another, they are coming down – and I believe we can all have the honor of playing a part in their fall.  We’ll start with electing Sanders – then we will elect more like him – and perhaps even some genuine socialists – imagine how the righties (in both parties) will howl.  Let them gnash their teeth, let them wail.  You are right – we are legion.  About god damn time, right?  Or, rather, perhaps… just in time, just in time to start turning things around.

I’m not mistaken about the opponent we face, it is massive, has unlimited resources – but what it doesn’t have?  A heart and soul – and I believe there are enough of us who have both – in sufficient amount to bring about its end.  Perhaps not you or I – but generations to come just might see the better world that we had a hand in bringing about.

I’ll work for that – I’ll keep on keeping on so that one day, humanity can be free.  Sooner or later, the worm is going to turn.  I think that it might just be sooner, we are on the precipice.

    Hi david,

Nice summation of the forces of evil acting within the country once known as America.  If the expectation in 2020 is electing someone capable of thwarting a further descent into the darkness of neo-liberalism and greed, I do agree that Bernie is the best candidate this election cycle.   However, if one has the expectation that electing Bernie will “save us from ourselves” then a dose of reality is in order.

Bernie will not be able to reverse global overpopulation.  Bernie will not be able to reverse the over consumption of Earth’s resources.  Bernie will not be able to forestall further Climate Change based on CO2 already emitted.  The only way to overcome those challenges is twofold: a global initiative to reduce human  population to a level sustainable by planet Earth and a global initiative to reduce per capita consumption of products and services that pollute the planet and emit CO2.  And that means for most Western Industrial citizens a reduction of lifestyle.  Even Bernie is not willing to go that far.

What Bernie can do is restore some semblance of order to the institutions and processes of a decaying empire.  However, all of Bernie’s plans for social change will only add to over consumption and the accelerated use of the planet’s resources.  While satisfying in the moment, these actions will only mask already existing problems for a few years at best.  And by then Berine will be gone to lead further change.

The change we really need is something akin to Roosevelt’s fireside chats where a President tells the people the complete and honest truth about our situation and the situation of the planet.  Those talks would lay out all the realities to include the limitations of our technology moving forward.  This would need to be a sobering wake up call for those raised to believe that technology will always “save us”.  To borrow a cultural allusion, all of the George Jetson wannabees would have to accept a new reality: they will not be working for Spacely Sprockets in some Floating Sky Factory reached via Flying Cars.  Those cultural fantasies need to die quickly and swiftly.

Should Bernie succeed in becoming the 46th President of the United States, the best we should expect is an abeyance of the forces of darkness.  Rest assured those forces will be busy writing a Powell Memorandum 2.0.  And as we saw with Obama, those pressures will be intense and intensified because Bernie will actual try to achieve much of what he has campaigned on.  And that struggle will decidedly slow a further descent into feudalism and fascism.  Beyond that, we should be honest with ourselves about our collective situation and the reality of our collective dishonesty in not being honest about how badly we have abused our home, planet Earth.

My hope is that Bernie can inspire others, that he will be part of the puzzle of resolving climate change.  It will require a great deal of sacrifice and struggle.  Still, a Sanders victory could give hope to many others with the right ideas about what needs to happen.

I know things cannot continue as they are – that population reduction and severely limiting the use of fossil fuels is necessary.  Could be Bernie is one of the many steps in the right direction.

He can help save us from ourselves, by restoring some decency and honesty in our politics.  By fighting the global company store.

No overnight fix or single person solution – but one can inspire many others.

      Hi david,

I do understand the desire for hope.  It is a human trait, maybe even a character defect of the species.  I prefer to think of action because hope can lead to passivity.

If Bernie does become the 46th President of the United States there will assuredly be a coattail effect.  And likewise there will assuredly be a backlash.

Just watching the ferocity of backlash since the beginning of 2020, commiserate with Bernie’s rise in the polls, provides a hint of the backlash to be seen should Bernie prevail.  While one could argue that Obama faced tougher.  Others could argue that collectively challenging the Oligarchs, Corporations and Banks simultaneously is a greater lift than becoming the first African American President.

When President Coolidge said “The Business of America is business.” few really appreciated both the sincerity or reality of that statement.  Sadly, Americans have lived in naivety of that reality since the last gilded age, always blinded by the “shiny apple”.  Since then, Americans have allowed the Oligarchs, Corporations and Banks to prevail in all matters to include politics as we have seen even with  the Vichy Dems.  Shameless Self-interest has outflanked Wisdom at every turn.

With half the country decidedly enthralled by the authoritarian glamour of big business i.e. Republicans, and with a half of the opposition also enamored with Millionaires and Billionaires i.e. Vichy Dems, that leaves a quarter or less of the population to act for the greater good.  Time will tell if that number is sufficient to stem the tides of darkness. The optimist would like to believe in quaint notions of better nature.  The pessimist is daily reminded of the vice of greed and greed’s enabler, fear.

Based solely on history and human nature, a betting man would wager that darkness will win simply because the human psyche is so easily swayed and manipulated.  But maybe, just maybe, the accumulated pain across society has reached a level such that our modern “bread and circus” (tv, beer, sports and sex) is no longer sufficient to ameliorate the masses.  Should such be the case, maybe a glint of optimism is warranted.  But then, such aspirations prevailed in 2008 with the resulting history now written.

Only time will tell which way the dice will fall.

Kicked and recommended to the max! Thank you, David. I really do appreciate this.

I would like to remind you that U.S. health insurance companies do not contribute anything to health care. They are only a PARASITIC middle man receiving an undeserved cut of "FREE MONEY".
