I was talking with a friend in Ukraine and talking about my ballot, which I’d just received today, and election choices. I mentioned Joe Biden and her 14 year old daughter immediately said

      Oh, he’s horrible.

My former orchestra conductor is Russian, and I did end up helping teaching English in Russia, so I have been fortunate to get a different exposure than the typical American.

But apparently saying I’m not identifies me as a Russian troll!

Warren: โ€œThese trolls, they go through kind of a life cycle. And the first step in that life cycle is to introduce themselves. There’s some community out there they’re trying to become a part of in order to try to influence the members of that community. And so the way you introduce yourself is you’d post something that people in that community are going to find interesting. They’re going to be likely to share in order to then use that sort of clout that you’ve built within that community later on. And that account actually didn’t get that far. They were shut down before that happened.โ€

Linvill: โ€œThese Russian trolls, they don’t work to antagonize people like one might think. They’re entrenching people in ideology, not working to change ideology.โ€

But I was amused how well I matched Russian troll warning signs!

What part of Ukraine do they live in? I’m curious because my wife found distant cousins, descended from her great-great-grandparents, in Lwiw, or Lvov depending on one’s language over there. These folks are very Ukrainian nationalist on the one hand but sure want to preserve that old Soviet social safety net on the other.

@ohiobarbarian I’ll start with the why first. As I first learned from my Russian conductor friend, Kyiv used to be the capital of Russia, in the days of Kievan Rus around a thousand years ago, when Ukraine was a part of Russia.

Or, as another Ukrainian friend (Dnipropetrovsk oblast, central Ukraine) said, when Russia was part of Ukraine!

My friend also lives in Dnipropetrovsk oblast, but family history from Belarus was destroyed during World War II so it’s harder know details.

So I decided just to ask as it’s to complicated for me ๐Ÿ™‚

She said she is international. “Who knows who I am.” She has relatives from Poland, Latvia, Belarus (which used to be part of Poland), and doesn’t know where her father’s family was from.

She also said like me – as I’m English, Welsh, Norwegian, French, Canadian, Blackfoot, Mexican and who knows what else!

@jbnw I did a DNA test once, and would like to do another one since they are ethnically more accurate now. I know I have a good dose of Norwegian Viking(later Norman French), but there’s some Scottish in there, something so old and peculiar to Britain that it’s likely to be Pictish, a good chunk of German, plus dashes of Moorish, northern Italian(Genoa), Arab, Ashkenazi Jewish, Danish, and some kind of Algonquin Native American(probably Ottawa, possibly Micmac).

I suppose it’s no surprise someone in her part of the world would have a diverse background, considering all of the convulsions that reason has endured for millennia.

@jbnw There are at least hundreds of people with my French surname spread all over Quebec, and most of them are distant cousins.

Just like my friends in Germany asked:

“Is this all that the US can offer?”
