Party leaders worry the Bernie Sanders wing will apply ideological purity tests

    Governors races test Democrats’ rift
Party leaders worry the Bernie Sanders wing will apply ideological purity tests in the South in 2018.

    http://www.politico.com/story/2017/03/governors-races-democrats-rift-235951

With 27 GOP-controlled governorships up for election in 2018, national Democrats envision the midterm elections as a chance to rebalance the scales at the state level, where there are currently twice as many Republican governors than Democrats.

But already, party leaders are running into a complication — unresolved issues left over from the Hillary Clinton-Bernie Sanders presidential primary. Far from defeated, Sanders-aligned progressives are nationalizing their fight, showing less patience than ever for Democrats who don’t agree with them. And that’s generating fear and nervousness in the South — in places like Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee — where some promising Democratic candidates who are looking at running statewide in 2018 could face resistance from the left.

“Here’s the challenge in many Southern states now: You have a more liberal primary base, because the more moderate voters are less likely to participate in Southern primaries, so it makes it more dicey. That certainly presents an opportunity for candidates who want to make a point rather than win an election — those candidates are less likely to be successful in a general election,” said South Carolina’s last Democratic governor, Jim Hodges. “In Southern states you’re going to need candidates who have more moderate stances to be successful.”

No Sanders-wing candidates have declared their candidacies yet in these Southern races. But the ambitions of Sanders’ post-presidential political operation, Our Revolution — and the wake of the Tom Perez-Keith Ellison proxy battle for the DNC chairmanship — has establishment-oriented Democrats worried about the prospect of grueling primaries or policy litmus tests in a region where the party can least afford to be divided.

      4. If refusing to vote for Democrats who take corporate money, and most especially

refusing to vote for Democrats who have acted in the corporate/financial aristocratic interest in the past is too ideologically pure for the Democrats, then they can go to hell. They are the ones fixated on one thing–big money donors–not the Bernie people.

      5. If I wanted to vote for a corporate whore theres always one available with an R

      next to his/her name.

Dont confuse me by running one with a D, I don’t want to have to think.  I’ll just vote for the R where I know what I’m getting instead of having to guess.

      9. Gov. Hodges where have we heard that before? Oh, yeah, Bill and Hillary Clinton

told us that in the 90s. They won but almost none of the Ds have won since then. We have been losing everywhere since then. And by we I mean the FDR Democrats. Obama won but he was not an FDR D he was more of a R. And this year with centrist Hillary we lost everything.

We are not corporatists. And we will not be voting for any of them either.

      11. "party leaders" code for the corporate, criminal cabal, they are worried? lol,

world domination is not enough for the oligarchy?

They are worried they are seen for what they are, there’s no mystery here, only rampant corruption, collusion & a new McCarthyism being born.  The blinders are off, and we see all of the ugliness like never before.

      16. Many Republicans hate corporatist shills just as much as Democrats do!

You f’d up corporate whore Democrats!  FIGURE IT OUT!  You are working against the NINETYNINE % of Americans and THAT is why you lose when you are less honest about how corporate serving than the Republican who at least is honest about that when he appeals to the other more right wing crap Republicans want.

If you ran on Bernie’s POPULIST issues, you just might get many of the REPUBLICANS to vote for you that LIKED populist positions on issues which is why Trump’s lies on being populist got him elected, when Clinton and her corporate SWILL avoided taking positions supporting populist issues like the plague, and DOOMED themselves!

GTFO out of the way if you don’t want people to mow you down!  Either that or wake up and smell the coffee and realize that Americans don’t want KORPORATE AMERIKA anymore!  And YOUR BS is what is keeping them from voting for Democrats, not Bernie and his supporters’ agendas!

Vote AGAINST the race to the bottom by both corporate parties who seek to screw workers over globally!

      17. Good. They evidently need one

to get the Dems to stop doing stupid shit – like having lobbyists in the DNC – supporting job killing trade deals like TPP – they need to unite behind a LIVING wage – basically – they need to be a progressive.  Hell even sHillary knows this – it’s why she LIED and said – multiple times – she is now “a progressive”.  Saying it is not enough though – we need to see action – and we need FIRED UP progressives like Bernie who will stand up and fight for us – and fight against the republicans.  Any Dem unwilling to do these things should not be in the party.   I hate that it’s us – the true progressives – who don’t feel welcome in the Dem party anymore – but since the party can’t seem to do these very basic things for us – I #Demexited last week.  I hope Bernie can fix this party – and it damn sure does need what I’d call “An Identity Test” instead of purity – cause right now – the Dems have no idea what they stand for – and being “Not Trump” is not a plan, it’s not a strategy, and it’s not fucking good enough – not even close.

        30. Same here! It's not a "win" if you're basically forced to vote for a horrible

      22. If you're not willing to lie to the American People, you are too pure for this

club who have taken over the Democratic Party. That’s the purity test.

More than half of American citizens refuse to vote for liars. Win over these people, and we win elections. Tell the truth and you win elections. If you think that being honest is too pure, you are by definition a dirty politician.

      23. Same people who called for Sanders supporters to be "culled"?

I can tell Democrats, southerners would rather vote for a Democrat that stands for something than a Democrat that stands for nothing. They still might not vote for a Democrat, but between the two, it’s 100% guaranteed, the one who has strong principles and stances will go further.

Not just in the south, come to think of it. If the Democrats keep running hollow, empty people, they’re going to keep ending up with hollow, empty seats and hollow, empty coffers.

If you will not speak out about voter suppression, if you will not speak against fracking, if you will not vote against war, if you will not support universal health care, if you will not work for $15/hr, if you will not speak for immigrants — why would I bother to vote for you?  I am issue oriented.  Party names no longer mean anything to me.  Action, position, what you have done in the last year mean something to me.

most people ever heard of sanders.

sirota is more a pro-israel aipac-type than corporate:

Later he moved to Washington, D.C. and worked in the political department of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).  His next job was as press aide and then spokesperson for Bernie Sanders, the independent at-large U.S. Representative from Vermont who describes himself as a “democratic socialist”.[1][4][6]

are not facing a Republican.  Bernie’s Platform vs. Clinton’s Platform, will be decided by the Left of each State.  Let’s see if the Left in each Southern State prefers a Right of Center kleptocracy, to social democracy.
