Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday rejected a push by some House Democrats to vote this weekend on standalone legislation to extend federal unemployment insurance payments that expired at the end of July, maintaining that it could undermine negotiations on other aspects of a coronavirus relief package.

“I don’t think strategically it’s where we should go right now, because the Republicans would like to pass something like that and say forget about it,” Pelosi continued. “Forget about state and local [government funding], forget about our investments in stopping the virus, forget about other initiatives that feed the food insecure children in our country, vote by mail initiatives and the rest.”

Seems like Pelosi want bailout for local governments rather than helping the unemployed.  She could have help up the first Covid relief bill unless they had included a bailout for local government.  But no, that would have held up the trillions she wanted to give to her rich friends.

Is Pelosi really a Democrat? (And yes, that’s a rhetorical question)

“There’s a new spirit abroad in the land. The old days of ‘grab and greed’ are on their way out. We’re beginning to think of what we owe the other fellow, not just what we’re compelled to give him. The time’s coming… when we shan’t be able to fill our bellies in comfort while others go hungry, sleep in warm beds while others shiver in the cold.... And God willing, we’ll live to see that day…” Basil Rathbone,"Sherlock Holmes Faces Death" (Universal 1943)

Pelosi is not an outlier, and she is not doing anything the Democratic Party does not want her to do.  The Democratic Party is now pretty much detached from anything but Wall Street and the MIC.

What fancy Nancy really really wants is her SALT tax cut. Peons can just eat dirt until she gets her way.

when I was s taxi activist we were faced with a similar situation. the city made us an offer, a fare hike in return for a fleet expansion.  I won’t bore you with details, but the fare hike would have been a poison pill, while the fleet expansion would have been fatal. I said that if we rejected the deal the city would take so much political pressure they would have to make a better deal. The counter argument was that we would be blamed for obstructing a rate increase that drivers desperately needed.  We took the deal. San Francisco no longer has a taxi industry. Pelosi thinks that if she keeps on stonewalling we will eventually force the republicans to give in. The problem is that in my example not only would we have won, but what we would have been sacrificing for would have been worth it to the people making the sacrifice. Nancy is just being evil.
