To those attending the demonstration tonight: Keep in mind the immediate risk the use of fire poses to community members. Since fire danger is very high right now due to high winds and the current dry climate, fire will spread quickly and could affect many lives.

Portland, we are currently in extremely flammable conditions and any spark has the ability to turn into a devastating fire. There are already multiple fires currently raging through the state and I am asking everyone to be mindful of these conditions as protests continue. 1/3

I am calling on the police to cease their use of any munitions that have the potential to ignite and for protesters to refrain from lighting anything as well. I know tensions remain high but it is critical that we work together in this moment to get through this. 2/3

Amazingly polite request to ask people not to break the law and not to do something really, really stupid. There’s plenty of smoke outside my Portland metro window from forest fires with high winds and like most of the west, very, very dry.

It isn’t the protesters, it’s the idiots that take advantage of the time and cause all this riot type of activity.

You gotta love the local government of Portland. I have been nothing short of totally impressed with their ability to allow the protests without being Nazis and using force to shut it all down.

Wish we had this type of leadership here jbnw.

….wouldn’t a dumpster fire be reasonably self contained and not likely to spread elsewhere?

        Absolutely not @satan

Not with these conditions. Sneeze and you start a fire. Humans. Not just you.

Shit on fire flies out and you got a real problem on your hands.

Sparks from the Eagle Creek fire were airborne and flying over the Columbia River and starting fires on the Washington side a couple of years ago. And the Columbia River is not narrow!

Oregon is being swept by likely the most deadly and destructive fires in its history, Gov. Kate Brown said Wednesday.

“I want to be upfront with Oregonians,” Brown said. “This could be the greatest loss of life and structures due to wildfire in state history.”

As of noon Wednesday, 47 active fires covering 374,522 acres were burning in Oregon, according to the Oregon Office of Emergency Management.

Brown said that the communities of Blue River and Vida in Lane County had been devastated, while Phoenix and Talent in Southern Oregon reported significant damage.
