      Fromh ttps://www.oregonlive.com/news/2020/09/portlands-air-quality-is-off-the-charts-on-sunday-and-much-of-oregon-is-just-as-bad-due-to-wildfires.html

The breathability of Portland’s air significantly worsened overnight and into Sunday, reaching 516 on the air quality index in the hardest hit parts of the city, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

That measurement is off the charts, which top out at 300 to 500 and categorize those numbers as “hazardous.”

The international air quality monitoring website IQAir.com was registering a lower number of 229 for Portland overall. That number is deemed “very unhealthy” for everyone. And that number was still high enough to place Portland in the No. 1 position for worst air quality among major cities in the world. Measurements fluctuated by the hour and at times Sunday morning Portland was tying with Vancouver, B.C.

I mean this not to brag or commit schadenfreude, but to contrast. A good AQI is anything under 30, and I’m sure Portland normally has a good AQI. This is how much smoke and ash is in the air. This is gods-damned apocalyptic and very, very dangerous.

Be careful out there, West Coasters.

And even the “good” spots like my neck of the woods was close to 300. We usually think it’s really bad when winter wood smoke is between 100 and 150.

Some places Friday were over 1000. I don’t know how you can breathe at that point.

My Portland contact says the visibility is so low you cannot see the car in front of you. She says most people are slowing down and using their headlights, but there are  few goofballs, the same drivers who refuse to slow down for fog or rain. She lives near Reed College, so not far from where your photo was taken. Up here on the Olympic Peninsula, we have a mixture of fog & smoke, and it’s hard to tell how much yuck is fog, and how much is smoke.

      Very unhealthful.

BTW, @jbnw, KVAL13 in Eugene just reported that the Holiday Farm Fire is at 10% containment as of Sunday, and the fire near Roseburg is at 20%. There is a chance of rain on Tuesday. But the fog apparently rolled in today and visibility is still very bad-as well as air quality. They just need a little westerly breeze to push that smokey air out so aircraft can get in. That should happen Monday morning/afternoon. And even our neighbors to the North in BC are getting smoked out too.

for all of us. The Portland dense smoke advisory was just extended from 11 PM tonight to Monday noon – I expect it’s sadly the same for you.

Still stuck in the SW. Hoping, though, I can be there around this time next year. I’m in a waiting game at the moment. But I’m kinda glad I’m not because I was there when Mt. St. Helens blew. That was nasty. Very nasty.

Nasty and scary – worked on a TV show the next day. Selected the opening to Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring as background music – fit the desolation perfectly.
