(THE Hill) Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday mocked the U.S. embassy in Moscow for flying a rainbow flag in celebration of LGBTQ+ rights, suggesting the waving of the flag “revealed something about the people that work there,” referencing the workers’ sexual orientation.

Putin’s statement follows Russia’s nationwide vote for constitutional reforms enshrining marriage as a union between a man and a woman, according to Reuters.

“It’s no big deal though. We have spoken about this many times, and our position is clear,” said Putin, who has centered the county’s values in alignment with the Russian Orthodox Church as opposed to the more liberal Western values of the U.S.

“Yes, we passed a law banning the propaganda of homosexuality among minors. So what? Let people grow up, become adults and then decide their own destinies,” he said.

Can I defend it’s position on LGBT issues no.  But who is the US to call the kettle black?

Russia’s 20th century was turbulent with 3 foreign invasions and 2 revolutions – all of which reek havoc on demographics….After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the relationship with the Russian Orthodox Church was restored – many in Russia consider that a positive thing.  One of the positive developments of Putin’s Administration has been improving Russian life expectancy, infrastructure and protecting Russian sovereignty.  In other measures to encourage demographic trends, the following were among the key points of Vladimir Putin’s state of the union 2/20.

The babies born during that decade are now in their child bearing years—and obviously there are few of them. There simply are not enough people in their prime child bearing years to sustain the population at the current rate. Thus, Putin proposed several ways of increasing the financial support for those who want to have children. He does not just want higher numbers, however. He said that Russia’s future depends on “how many children are born in Russian families in one, five or ten years, on these children’s upbringing, on what kind of people they become and what they will do for their country, as well as the values they choose as their mainstay in life.” Thus, the speech outlines where he believes Russia must focus its resources for these families and the children all the way through college.

Seventy to eighty percent of low-income families in Russia are families with small children. In January of this year monthly benefits to these families were extended until the children reach the age of 3. Previously it was 18 months. They will receive 11,000 rubles per child per month. That is a bit over $170 at the current exchange rate. Putin expressed his desire that payments of 5,500 rubles ($86) per month be extended until the children reach the age of 7 if the family is below the “subsistence level.”

Within Russia, there are also mechanisms/facilities for childcare at businesses, department stores, etc.   There is paid maternity leave, etc., etc.  According to this article from Russia Beyond the Headlines, written before Putin’s 2020 speech,  family leave is available to men and women but not all men take it….

One can ask why is it that the US/society + focuses on the negative aspects of Russian society rather than the positive and fails to ask what the US could (but won’t) learn from Russia but we already know the answer to that.

We are all supposed to have our hair on fire, approve of cold/hot war with Russia, and vote for the BLUE because the blue wants sanctions, if not war, with Russia.  Only 30 countries in the world allow gay marriage.  And I think that folks like Obama and Hillary are only giving lip service – they were strongly AGAINST gay marriage, but they would say whatever it takes to get a vote.  So now they say they are for it.  IMO, not really.    Also, Putin making Russian lives better might be contrasted with our government making American lives worse.  Both parties complicit.  Also hating on Russia is very good for the MIC budget, and Rachel Madcow.  What on earth would Ms. Rachel talk about?  Also, Hillary really really needs, deeply needs, for us all to believe Russia is why she lost.  Ooops, except for Bad Bernie Supporters and Jill Stein.   Basically Hillary would be president if only more people had voted for her.  Plus look at all the work that was done with California totals!!!!  All for naught!!!!!

The US Embassy in Seoul was ordered to take down a Black Lives Matter banner, which was equally hypocritical.  The purpose is just propaganda to goad the targeted audience with hypocritical talking points.    No one abroad is fooled.

@soryang They rightly see those symbols, under this American president, as both imperial hubris and a really terrible attempt at propaganda.

Most Americans see right through it, too, and Trump’s really racist and homophobic supporters are pissed off that some state department pinko would do this to the President and wonder why they don’t get fired.

I’d hope that would be the case.   But i have a different impression.   I can’t verify it one way or the other.

@soryang This includes a majority of the 40% of Americans who never bother to vote, because there’s no one running who gives a damn about them. Add around a third to half of us who usually vote to them and that’s most of us.

You just tend to see very few of that 40% on political discussion forums or see them talking politics anywhere on the internet. For the most part, they just think “all politicians are crooks.” That doesn’t mean they don’t know bullshit when they see it.

I truly wonderful side benefit. The flag over the embassy pisses off homophobes regardless of their nationality. Kudos to the embassy staff since the risked their jobs by pissing of our “You’re Fired” president.

They are called 'human' rights not "if politicians do not feel threatened" rights. Many politicians see national sovereignty/security as more important because they protect their power and wealth. Human rights often do just the opposite.

National issues (slavery/racism, income inequality, pandemics and pathetic health care, weak unions) are not solved with more states' rights. Global problems (climate change, migration, trade, war, pandemics) are not resolved with more national sovereignty.
