    Question re meta discussion

I am unclear what meta discussion is.  I have reviewed the Community Standards and see nothing that uses the words Meta Discussion or that says one can’t post things found on JPR that one questions – for example this related to me posting links to JPR OPs where the post was closed for review where there did not seem to be anything wrong with the post i.e., one was a link to a story from The Atlantic Journal.  That being moot…the question really is what is “meta discussion” and why is it not defined or listed in Community Standards.

We have consensus that we will be deleting the post as meta discussion covered under the attacks rule.  [balance of response deleted as it seemed to be to me personally and I don’t want to start anything re the appropriateness of the response]

    1. Ah, Meta.

There used to be a forum on teh SV called “Meta Discussion”, which was basically people questioning / bitching about the way the site was being run.  It was a real shitstorm and pretty much a failed experiment… It was replaced by a very draconian “Ask The Administrators”, where nobody could see what question you asked unless it was answered by an Admin – and they ignored more questions than they answered.

I can understand why a website wouldn’t want their dirty laundry out where everyone can see it – In general, the more argumentative your question is, the more likely it is that they’ll lock it. I don’t really know what the best answer is.  I used to get really involved in discussions about how that other website was run, but got tired of the dismissive answers and then came the point where it became clear that it was just no longer my kind of place.

I’d say, if you have concerns or questions, you’re probably better off directing them in a PM to Mary – but right now seems to be a particularly difficult time for her and the admin/mods in general. For me, I’m just taking a wait-and-see approach and kinda taking it on faith that a lot of things are going to get sorted out in due time.

      2. I have gotten no response in this Q&A

And remember all too well how any post could be deemed “Meta” and removed.  I don’t see anything about Meta in the community rules and have not seen it used for closing a thread.  I think we are seeing a change in the flow and am frankly worried.

I will wait and see though how it all plays out….hopefully I have learned enough to go before being banned.

        4. I think we're all a bit worried

It’s change. When Obama won the election, the other place changed. Now Trump has won and so this place is changing. It’s unavoidable.  The change hasn’t come from the admin, it’s come from the situation. Either we trust the admin to deal with the change as best they can, or we don’t. I’m sure they want our input, but not necessarily in the form of a public call-out.

        7. I believe you were responded to.

You were told that you brought up a good question we’re reviewing.

And the Atlantic post was accidentally closed and reopened.

We’re swamped. The reports are crazy. Crazy reports by people who are trying to cause problems by reporting every post they see. Crazy reported posts. All while short handed.

Posts that are just stating unfair, wrong things about jpr are not going to stand. We’re too busy to deal with all the attacks that happen on those. They accomplish nothing.

Legitimate questions, like what is meta, are ok. Yes, we need to be clearer on that.

Posting a pm is against the rules. And that’s very clear.

I’m sorry we’re so swamped and short handed. We’ve grow exponentially in a very short time. All while I’m recuperating. Growing pains. It would be nice to get some leeway from our members.

No one is stopping any conversation on the DNC or Clinton.

I’m sorry you’re unhappy and worried. Give us some time to work some stuff out. Please.

          8. Thank you Mary.

You will note I have NEVER reported a post and never told a JPR member that they are a Hillbot of Shill. I try to state my position and support JPR Both with a bag of food for the hamsters and my good wishes.

When I saw posted being closed I became concerned.  I am sorry to have added to the struggle.

You might recall Meta was often the oppressive tool of that other place.  My interaction with the one mod was unpleasant and raised my concern.

I shall stand down and continue to support JPR and send good wishes that the growing pains are quickly resolved.

Peace be with you Mary and pink healing bubbles are on their way for your poor back.

    3. I think the term meta is a holdover from another place, many members from the

other places are just used to the term. Meta discussion is discussing other posters or complaining about the site.  I have always found that f I have a question about the way any site is run its always best to privately discuss it with the admins who created the site via e mail or a message.

      5. It is a silly policy in my humble opinion.

Is this a site to discuss things or just a site to parrot policy.

        6. I have seen no curtailing of discussion. I have also not seen any

        policy parroting.
