Sanders stumps for Mello in Omaha, stirs national debate about definition of a p

    By Roseann Moring

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders thinks Omaha mayoral candidate Heath Mello is part of the Democratic Party of the future.
But some Democrats don’t agree – they argue that Mello’s opposition to abortion disqualifies him from being called a progressive. Sanders’ endorsement of Mello sparked a national debate Thursday among Democrats that touched on the future direction of the party.
At a three-hour rally at the Baxter Arena with speakers from a variety of backgrounds and several musical interludes, Sanders laid out his vision for the country. And he said it involves a Democratic party that “stand(s) up for voters in 50 states, not just the West Coast and the East Coast.”

“Omaha, are you ready for a political revolution?” he said.

    1. It took reading FOUR articles to cut through the bullshit – Mello is Pro-Choice!

But you’ld never know it by half the articles out there trying to make a story – many of them calling him anti-abortion – even though in reality – he is pro-choice, or at least that’s what he said on record today (He does have some pretty shady votes on record when it comes to abortion and a woman’s right to choose tho).  So I finally found an article which addresses – Is Mello Pro-Choice – I’ll let you read it for yourselves:

“The Democratic candidate for mayor of Omaha, Nebraska, told The Huffington Post on Thursday that if elected, he “would never do anything to restrict access to reproductive health care.””

    ~snip~

“In his most recent term in the legislature, Heath Mello voted 100% with Planned Parenthood Voters of Nebraska,” Mello campaign manager Paige Hutchinson said in a statement. ”

This is not to say I think Mello is a good candidate or even close to a progressive – but one thing IS clear – the Media, and The DNC, and The Dems – have it out for Bernie – they are not our friends.

    2. Thank you, Omaha Steve!

This had to have been so exciting! I appreciate your efforts to share this with with us and am jealous we don’t get to see him here for some reason. Oh well, AZ is only about a 6 hour drive each way!!

Muchas gracias and my best to you and yours!

    4. I thought the goal was to get Democrats elected.

What’s Hillary bro’s beef with Bernie’s support of Mello? Do they want the Republican to win?

      5. They are in nit-pick mode..

anything they can scrounge up.. The polls and the recent Harvard exposure of their smear campaign has official made their collective heads explode. It’s actually quite pathetic and transparent to watch, anyone why implies that Bernie isn’t a tried & true progressive/liberal has an arterial motive and/or an axe to grind…

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker will be in Omaha on Monday to campaign with Mayor Jean Stothert.
His visit will come on the heels of one by former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, a Vermont senator, who will appear today with Stothert’s opponent, Heath Mello.

Walker will appear with Stothert at 4 p.m. Monday at the DC Centre, 11830 Stonegate Drive.

    8. I voted for Bernie and would do so again. But, not for a pro-preggers Dem.

    Progressive?  I don’t think so.
