Penny Chenery and my mother were pretty close.

Only got to meet her once, when she flew into town.

Took her to a Kinko’s. Very nice lady and huge figure in gender related sports history.

What tremendous photos!  I have to admit that I can’t help but get teary eyed when I hear the Fogelberg song – for Secretariat and the also-rans, thoroughbred or not.

I went to Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Canada. Right by the entrance was a life-size statue of Secretariat.

I went to the Belmont Stakes the year Secretariat won the Triple Crown, but I bet on a horse named Sham. Sham challenged him for the lead through half the race but, as I remember, Sham ended up finishing last.

I think you won just by being there for this historic moment – despite your bet on Sham…Until 1973’s Belmont, there hadn’t been a triple crown win since Citation in 1948.
