    Site problems – more info

As many of us know, JPR’s been having some problems for the past week or so:

    1. replies now need a title *and* something in the message box,
    2. certain links are causing strange pop-ups on Apple devices, and
    3. Some folks can’t type anything into the text box.

These problems stemmed from a batch of updates being applied to the live site before they were tested – unfortunately, these updates may have altered our database in a way that’s not feasibly reversible without losing all posts since the updates were made. It will take some time to sort through the updates’ changes to site functionality to find what caused the breakage, then we’ll need to fix — and test,  so that we don’t have another round of this pain.

Also, obviously, we need to wait until the guy on the right comes down.

Note that we have no indications that there’s any sort of security issues – in fact, the updates applied (too quickly) were, in large part, to patch vulnerabilities that had been found in our software (WordPress).

In short, we’d rather try to do it right than do it quick — thanks for your patience!

      1. I had problem #2 on another site a long time ago

In that case, it happened independently of any software upgrade.

The cause was an image in somebody’s sig.  It was possibly a formerly-free image hosting site, but somebody took it over and set up the images to require account names and passwords, possibly just logging them for use by hackers.

This is an issue which should be fixed at the browser level.  If a third-party image requests a password, it should be dropped from the page.

But if there are browsers which haven’t been fixed, it’s up to JPR to remove the password-protected images.  Until then, users should ignore the popup.

I can offer no help. But I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all that you do. JPR is definitely my new go-to place, and you make it possible. Thank you Manny. Thank you a thousand times.

      6. I just got logged out now that prevented me from having a post submitted…

I had just posted another post just a few minutes or so earlier… When trying to post this one, the page was just hanging without completing the submission and I noticed that the page coming up was “not logged in”.  Went to another tab and verified that I wasn’t logged in.  Logged in there, and then refreshed the page that said it would resend the submission, but the post was not submitted then.

So potentially another problem introduced with those updates?…

          9. A lot of work I'm doing with newer rendition of candidates page..

… which should probably be pinned now (#11) instead of (#10) which had just expired.

I also note when editing these that when you try to group select some text to copy and paste, that it extends an “italic” definition of a word at the beginning all the way through the text being pasted in the paste buffer.  And then trying to make the rest of the text all normal sometimes has to be done on multiple occasions for different blocks of the text, as perhaps only the first few words, etc. get unset then.  I think it has to do with blocks of texts with other punctuation and line feeds separating part of that selected text.  Nothing severe that I can’t work around, and should probably be de-prioritized with the other stuff you have, but worth a note to put on the list later when you aren’t busy.

Still would like to find a way to have a virtual link type of post that would allow it to be pinned and stay pinned but have it point to different posts as they get “locked”, which would help I think with getting more site traffic with more static URL references to JPR from external sources such as search engines, etc.  That would help I think get us more on the radar with things like 2018 candidates or other long standing issues where we want a post that can be one that people will link to from other sites.  Not a bug like the other ones you are dealing with now that need higher priority, but something that would be cool later.  I’d help out if there’s a way to help.  Would perhaps help me with keeping my dev skills fresh to help me get back a decent paying job later as my health gets better now that I’ll need to survive this coming year.  At least I know now that I don’t need to do any kind of cancer surgery, etc. now, and I’m glad that they got stuff out before it could become cancerous when they did a few weeks ago.

        34. Just got logged out again before adding a second edit to candidates list…

… where I’d just added a candidate a few minutes earlier, and then was logged out when trying to save a new rendition of the same page, that failed in updating the page then.  So, apparently we are being still logged out, and not due to inactivity on our sessions.

      12. Another problem with the text-body input field.

And it probably doesn’t affect many people, but it’s a function I like.

The ability to expand the field isn’t working.

You used to be able to grab that little triangle in the bottom right-hand corner and pull it down to expand the field. And example of its use would be if you posted an image from a source, and the image was original size (in other words, huge!) and you want to be able to still see your text more than one like at a time. Pull the triangle, and you expand the field as large as you like.

Well, it seems it’s working on this post, but it didn’t on the last post I made, to a thread about Hurricane Hilary. I posted a big image from Weather Underground, and it stopped working for expandability.

So, it may be one of those intermittent bugs that only happens to annoy posters, but never happens when you’re trying to point it out to the professionals who fix things

            21. It was a bad update on a plugin

We updated it, as you’re supposed to do, only to find out it broke the site for some people

It was tested first but since it only happened to some, we didn’t know it would happen at all.

We reverted it to the earlier version but the cache can take days to clear itself enough to work.

I’m sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you for your patience.

              22. No problem.

It only happened the one time, and then on the next post after, it was working again. I didn’t clear cache or do anything except work on another post. So, I don’t know what was the cause. It may have just been a floating glitch in the system. Most people probably wouldn’t have noticed, especially if they didn’t post large images.

      24. Still having problems with being logged off while posting…

Noted it in posting a response to another post here…

      https://jackpineradicals.com/boards/topic/david-gill-looks-like-a-good-progressive-in-illinois-13th-district/

Subsequently after logging in again and posting that one post here, I resumed editing the other post I was making for the 13th candidates thread.  I was afraid this would happen, and it did, in that what I was editing (putting back in a lot of the links a text stylizations, etc.) didn’t make any post when I tried to post it, so it must have been still associated with the previous session that was expired rather than the newly logged in one.  So, it would appear that the timeout function of sessions still has some bug in it that logs people out arbitrarily, even if they’re in the middle of multiple windows of posting activity.

      26. Two problems I am having up to now:

      1)  When logging in, I check off the “remember” function, yet must frequently fill out my handle and password if I want a reply function to appear.  This esp. after I am not on this site for three+ days;

      2)  When I hit the “post reply” function, it frequently doesn’t post and my entire text is lost.  If I hit it twice and remember to check on the dancing dots’ movement, then it posts.  Happened again today.

Thank you for a thankless job!

      27. I think some of the changes to editing functionality are causing problems…

I see that you have added an “Add Media” button, that looks good.  Still want to try that soon for some things, but it sounds like there was a big set of changes added to the editing functionality that in some cases are making things more problematic from my standpoint.

I’ve noticed this when trying to edit our Campaign 2018 candidates page, which really is a lot more difficult now with the newer changes in place.

The newer problems I’ve noticed are:

      1. The site implicitly has a double line break when hitting a carriage return typing in text that gives it a “paragraph” like separation rather than a single line.  This has been around for a while, but one can work around this by cutting and pasting a single line break either from another source or within the context of text that you are entering and a single line break would be there which allowed to get either single or double line breaks with not too much extra effort.  Now trying to cut and paste line breaks has two lines and there is no real way just to cut and paste a line break any more.  One has to cut and past a whole block of text with embedded line breaks and type in the newer text you want in there instead around the line breaks of that cut and paste block instead.  A lot less intuitive or usable.
      2. If you insert a link, and try to type text right after the link, it will get added to that link even if you don’t want to have those characters as being part of that link.  It is not really possible but to have the text (like and an end parenthesis, and other text at least a character or two away to the right instead, and then just back up over characters next to the link until you get to the link instead to avoid this “linkification”.  Again, less usable or intuitive.
      3. I think there are other side effects, and I’ll post as I see them.

          29. Just hoping you aren't switching to a host provider owned by EIG…

I’ve had so many problems since they took over my old ISP verio.  Some just the yesterday…  EIG is a growing ISP monopoly, and in the age of perhaps ditching net neutrality, will be aided by such unless many of them sign up with competitors like Dreamhost or A2 Hosting, Dreamhost is taking on the Trump folks and is a local ISP here, in their efforts to grab tons of their site visitor’s private information with their court warrants.  Not sure that a company like EIG would do that.

I’m moving to A2 Hosting, but it has gotten lower priority in my life lately with so many other fires to fight now.  But I think I will prioritize getting moved over to them within this next week.  Scheduled to talk with Senator Wyden’s reps shortly on net neutrality issues early next week.

Here are some articles to read on EIG and the ISP space now…

      31. I've had two things crop up.

A post was lost in the ether.  It was totally innocuous, just DJean11 and I discussing vacations and cruises in the Robocall settlement thread.  I think it was Saturday night.  I reported it.

The second was I could not reply to anything because the button didn’t show up until I whitelisted JPR in Adblock.

Other than that, which I consider that pretty minor in comparison to transitions I’ve been a part of or seen before. I’d call it pretty darn good.  I think your hamsters got really high on the initial mix, but once they stabilize, they will be happy hamsters proud to keep our fine website going !

      32. Persistent problem of losing entire texts.

      I am ignorant of computers.

When I post a reply, the little blue dots start their sweep.  But if I get a notice of too many characters in the title, and I shorten the title, or eliminate the entire title, the little blue dots will continue til hell freezes over and nothing posts. If I cancel, lost text. What should I do?

I am using an insignia tablet with android in Chrome.  Thank you.

      35. I've had a number of problems with the way line feeds, etc. are entered…

…, cut and pasted, etc. that has me having to be creative to get what I want in terms of what and where I cut and paste text from.

But one problem that is very reproducible that you can do that perhaps could be fixed.  If you have a set of matching paren characters together as follows, “()”, and then try to put spaces in between these parens, the second or third space character you try to type in between those parens will ALWAYS be a period.  Try it and you’ll see.  Trying to understand why, even in another editing context, a period character getting entered from hitting a space key is useful.  Anyway, I back up and delete the period character and replace it with a space, and that works.

Also, another problem…   If you try to enter a link in, and don’t have any space characters after it before the end of the line, you can’t just position the cursor after that link at the end of the line to try to type new text after the link without the link trying to make that text as part of the link.  It works best if you enter a link with some space characters following it, so that you can then add your text after the space characters and if you want, you can then delete those space characters to have the other character not part of the link.  I find that useful when trying to have a link between parenthesis characters as I do frequently on the candidate’s list page.  Kind of pain to have to edit that way though, so it might be helpful to have you only modify the text characters in a link by selecting the link itself and updating them, not trying to force anything you type after the link to be a part of that link.
