Bruce Tomlin, a 63-year-old truck driver from New Mexico, said he was never really a “gun person.” Then he saw a video of three white men following and fatally shooting Ahmaud Arbery while he was jogging.

“The man is trying to get away and they’re just gunning him down in the street like he was a dog,” Tomlin said about watching the video of Arbery. “It’s made me hypervigilant. It has made me nervous. I’ll even admit to being a little bit scared sometimes.”

So he bought a gun. And he’s planning on buying more.

“I just feel like in my viewpoint, every Black person in America, especially Black males, needs to have some type of protection with them as often as [they] can, because I think the political climate [is] getting to the point where it’s just going to be a lot of violence coming our way,” Tomlin said. “I just feel safer now having a gun. And I didn’t always feel that way. I’ve never been the world’s biggest fan of guns, but I just don’t feel safe without one.”

Black people are arming themselves. Not just Black people, either, working and middle class whites who were all for gun control only a few years ago, people afraid of right wing militia groups and the police themselves. People who sense society is breaking down and that the odds of them needing a gun to defend themselves and their families some day are geometrically increasing.

This two paragraphs illustrate that last point:

“The highest overall firearm sales increase comes from Black men and women, who show a 58.2% increase in purchases during the first six months of 2020 versus the same period last year,” Jim Curcuruto, the National Shooting Sports Foundation director of Research and Market Development, wrote in a report, according to AOL News. “Bottom line is that there has never been a sustained surge in firearm sales quite like what we are in the midst of.”

Philip Smith, the president of the National African American Gun Association, said that he had a massive influx of members in two waves: Once, in 2016, following President Donald Trump’s election, and again during the recent racial justice protests. He said a year ago, NAAGA was getting maybe 10 new members a day; now, its seeing 10 new members an hour. He said there are many factors pushing Black people to buy firearms, including “the politics right now, the pandemic and the racial tone: Those three things together act as kind of a three-headed monster that is driving folks to come to us.”

We are being divided into teams, Black/White, wealthy/poor, MEGA/Sane, etc. Like a game of Paint Ball, only the ones shot can’t get up and walk away, to play another day.

We are an arrogant species, believing our fantasy based "facts" are better than the other person's fake facts.
If you are wrong, it will be because you are not cynical enough.

@retiredliberal The only ones planning for a civil war are the same right wing fucks who have been “planning” for one since the end of the actual Civil War. The oligarchy certainly doesn’t want a civil war. For a civil war to happen now, a real revolution would have to happen first, and the civil war would be the ancien regime trying to get back into power.

Our oligarchy doesn’t think a revolution can happen here. Our police can’t imagine that people ambushing them could become so common it’s barely mentioned on the news anymore, and that could happen within two years. No, the narrative is that the American sheep will never look up, and will allow themselves to be led to serfdom or the slaughterhouse because they can’t put down their smartphones and video games.

In short, I don’t think there’s any plan to this. I do think our society is breaking down, and that people sense it. I know I do.

We’ve got the same lunatic-fringe we always had, @ohiobarbarian; they aren’t any different.

Most aspects of our society have gone from merely crumbling to “free fall collapse”, and that’s definitely a new paradigm for most of us. That -IS- different.

Our Media propagandists simply can’t maintain the illusion of normalcy- this isn’t normal, and everyone is feeling it, even those who can’t actually SEE it yet…. except the 1%, those few whose lives are completely insulated from reality.

You know, I’ve heard that the baskets under the guillotines back in the day were just chock-full of puzzled expressions, and I find that to be very believable.

If you give a man enough rope, it will be six inches too short. This is not the nature of rope- it is the nature of man.

Instead, it’s about gun training, too strong police unions, a few bad apples, gun control … everything but the most obvious problem – lethal weapons in the hands of local law enforcement.  Even though examples in the developed world exist of peaceful societies with local authorities who do not possess such weapons, or possess them but can use them only after getting approval.

Americans aren’t honestly interested in talking about solutions to police brutality, IMO.

From feudalism to slavery to capitalism, the rich have always been attacking, killing and abusing the poor.

This racial divide is what us new. It was invented to promote black slavery.

I think so too @retiredliberal — not necessarily civil war per se but breakdown of trust among people so they look to the top for ‘protection’.  The same tactic that’s always used.

Build trust in your friends neighbors and community is the fightback I see

“I don’t think there’s any plan to this. I do think our society is breaking down…”

—If *you* ‘sense it’ you can be sure the ptb do too.  If there’s nothing in place to change it or make it better beyond talk, then its ‘planned’.

@polecathollerer Very well said–Most aspects of our society have gone from merely crumbling to “free fall collapse”, and that’s definitely a new paradigm for most of us. That -IS- different. Exactly.

And I’ve intensely learned a lot about the French Revolution. There were a lot of puzzled expressions on the heads falling into baskets. Many of them were members of the nobility who never saw it coming until the men-with-guns came for them and still couldn’t believe they would actually be executed until the heard the blade coming down.

The lower orders successfully rising up was that unthinkable to them.

@closeupready We can talk about disarming the police all we want, but it will never be more than talk with this government. Guns are real and obtainable. Disarming the police is an unattainable dream in this political system, and every single one of those Black people cited in the OP’s article know that to be true.

Let us not forget that Progressives have guns, too.

@fasttense There were several rebellions where African slaves, European indentured servants, and a few Native Americans joined forces to kill some plantation owners and pillage their mansions. The planter class invented the idea of the white race to divide the working class Europeans from the other two ethnic groups.

Talk is where most momentous things start.  @ohiobarbarian

Do I have correct, you’ve given up on talking about change?

@closeupready Thinking just talking alone is going to bring about change? Yeah, I’m done with that. I’m also done with thinking voting is going to change anything. I live in the real world.

We can talk about disarming the police all we want, but it will never be more than talk with this government.

      @ohiobarbarian

Then you respond by posting this:

Thinking just talking alone is going to bring about change? Yeah, I’m done with that.

I can’t reconcile these two ideas.  Either you are going to talk or you aren’t.  You say you are done with talking, and then you say you aren’t.  Can you clarify?  Thanks.

America standing up  would require universal involvement to succeed. By that I mean that with our present surveillence state  just a few gestapo wannabees and a SWAT team can assassinate enough of us to end an uprising. (for a generation) A handful of drone pilots could do for the oligarchy if only a regiment rises up (until a couple of divisions join, then it’ll snowball) Almost no circumstances could provide such an absolute realization. We need a figurehead so blatantly evil that all would agree with the need to come forward. Trump won’t do – he’s a blustering fool, not a real threat, an American Stalin or a Pol Pot. Even Mao won’t do it.  We need a genocidal Lovecraftian horror. We need Hillary.

If we are really going to have a breakdown of society we should be learning to grow food or generate our own power etc.
