I work for the county Department of Human Services. Our executive director sent out an email yesterday, citing Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson’s declaration of civil emergency stating that downtown–where our building is–is closed to all but essential personnel and “employees required to work” or something, and told us we had to go through the jackbooted thug checkpoints, park our cars in unguarded parking lots, and report to work.

Hours later, the Mayor issued a revised proclamation with that convenient little exemption removed. Now it says only police, fire, medical personnel, and accredited media people are allowed in. Well, we ain’t any of them.

We’re receiving no guidance or support from the union, AFSCME, and nothing but silence from the county, whose last statement was that we were to try to go to work. Yesterday, many of us did, and were yelled at by police to go home. Today, I think most of us will stay home. I called in and quoted the Mayor’s ban on travel into the “curfew” zone to the director’s voicemail, and I know I have lots of company if the union local’s Facebook page is any indication.

The county actually told us to report to work but forbade us from stepping outside of the building for the entire day for our own safety. Well, we’re in a glass building, so if it’s not safe for us to step outside, how is it safe for us to go there in the first place? It’s unreasonable.

Hell, no, we won’t go! It could get real interesting real quick. The county will probably back down, but no one knows for sure. Wish us luck.

Sounds totally f’d up. Has it gotten ugly overnight in Cleveland? And your mayor, what’s he like in general? I wouldn’t go in my friend. Glass breaks easily.

      Good luck.

@elias39 This seems to be a lockdown just to demonstrate police power and control. As for Frank Jackson, a worthless neoliberal Democrat who is in his third term, he is often referred to as “Mayor Invisible” for good reason. About the only time we see him is when he is telling other black people to stay calm or when another story about his delinquent grandson getting arrested again for riding his dirt bike on a public street surfaces.

Jackson’s greatest accomplishments were getting a dirt bike track built and sucking up to the Republicans to get their 2016 convention here. If you want to see just how ineffective he’s been as mayor, just drive on most Cleveland streets. Your mechanic will thank you when they replace another tie rod caused by unavoidable potholes that are everywhere except in the corporate parts of downtown and in wealthier areas and hipster areas.

Keep yourself at home, stay safe.  If they cant get their shit together enough to even have clarity on what you should do – fuck em.  Common sense beats luck 9 times out of 10.  Too bad none of our damn leadership has any.

@davidthegnome In the 60s and early 70s we had LBJ and Nixon, who at least did things to address some of the issues people were protesting over. LBJ got the Fair Housing Act through in 1968. Nixon stopped the draft a few years later.

Now we have Trump urging for the Army go in and start shooting American citizens, and Biden calling for police to shoot protesters in the legs instead of in the face or chest. I suppose that means that Biden is the lesser evil on police violence and we’re privileged if we don’t vote for him.

I don’t see how things won’t get worse.

Wishing me dead, eh, @not4sale? Naughty, naughty.

I’d rather take my chances with the coronavirus than with trigger-happy POlice.

Wild cat strike. Italian strike. Calling in sick strike. SaboCat strike.

No need to stick only to lockdown strike and curfew strike. If you are not doing essential care work to satisfy basic needs, strike in innovative ways that cause no self-harm and least risk, while help most to stop the system of violence functioning and being able to kill and harm us.

      Aloha!
