    SOMEONE HAS YOUR PASSWORD

(Guccifer 2.0 related to latest hack.  Mods, move to General if you wish, thanks)

AUGUST 12–The e-mail from Google arrived at 4:09 AM on March 22 and contained an ominous alert for its recipient, William Rinehart, a staffer with Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

“Someone has your password,” the e-mail’s subject line declared. “Someone just used your password to try to sign in to your Google Account,” warned the message, which reported that the incursion attempt came from an IP address in Ukraine.

While the “Gmail Team” advised Rinehart that the sign-in attempt was stopped, he was told, “You should change your password immediately.”

When he received the message–which carried the address no-reply@accounts.googlemail.com–Rinehart was in Hawaii preparing for the March 26 Democratic presidential caucus. An experienced organizer, Rinehart, 33, has previously worked for the United Nations Foundation, Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns, and Organizing for America, which was formed to build grass roots support for Obama’s legislative agenda.

What is wrong with these people?  They fall for the simplest phishing expedition ever.  Change your password from the website, not a link in an email.  Simple.  Jesus.  They get what they deserve.

    3. LOL At least in this case, they weren't hacked.

They simply gave their passwords away.  Wow, even the most basic security protocols weren’t taught or followed.

I wonder how many of them have fallen for the IRS telephone scam.

    4. I got an alert from Google about someone possibly having my password – so,

I changed it.   Now they’ll have to go to the trouble of getting THAT one too.  nyah nyah

I feel much better since I've given up hope

      6. The key is to change it on the website, not click the link in the email

If you did that, you’re fine.  No one had your password, they’re tricking you into giving it to them.

Unless you already understand all this and I’m misunderstanding :)

            10. I looked at the Google email and it said in a heading:

            REVIEW BLOCKED SIGN IN ATTEMPT

and that Google had “blocked” someone from signing into my account, etc.

FWIW the wording in my email is different and so is the email address from what Rinehart received.

Anyway -I just went to the website and changed the password, and set up the 2 step verification.  Thanks!

              12. They got ya, it's called phishing (fishing), Google stopped it

You should be fine now.  A good rule of thumb is to change your password once a month.  And don’t click email links, go to the website.  You’re more than welcome.

so savvy….  Oh no they won’t get me!   (blush) – I did once figure out that a bank email was a fake though.  (pats self on back)

We’ve all been there.  Any questions, just ask.  Someone will know the answer, because it’s happened to them at one time. :)

                  19. If you hover over the link in the email, you should see the url it is directing

you to. It’s usually something that is not at the real domain. Something from Google re: email would not have gmail.com in it or something from PayPay would not have paypal.com in it, it would have some other odd url. That’s the tip off right there. Most of them are way off, some get clever and have gmail or PayPal in it somewhere but it is modified and you can tell it’s not the official site.

Their email addresses are being used to set up profiles on Tinder, Ashley Madison, general porn, you get the idea.
