The Bezos Post thinks very highly of Stacey Abrams. This one actually manages to be more ridiculous in its fawning than that Beto piece in Vanity Fair; it’s also very funny. Some of the best (or worst depending on how you choose to evaluate it) parts:

“Pandemonium ensues as she walks to the far left of the stage, like a runway supermodel, stops on a dime, poses, tilts her head slightly and smiles. Camera flashes explode. She next pivots and walks slowly to the center of the stage, freezes there and repeats the pose. Again, the flashes explode. Abrams is summoning her inner actress, and she is both enjoying the moment and getting through it to get to the conversation. She then pivots and walks to the far right of the stage, same. You wonder whether she has done this before, because it is not necessarily what one would expect from a 46-year-old politician who was nearly elected the first black female governor in U.S. history. She lost by fewer than 2 percentage points in the 2018 Georgia race riddled with allegations of voter suppression. Before that, she was a state legislator who had served as a leader in the Georgia General Assembly for a decade. Now her name is on political pundits’ shortlists of potential running mates for Joe Biden. She also happens to have predicted that she’ll be elected president by 2040.”

Look at that. She’s calling her political ascendancy like Babe Ruth calling his shot. My sides, they’re splitting… I have to give the writer credit for eschewing any pretense of objectivity and impartiality, deciding instead to embrace the reality that this is just a puff piece by using the most comically over the top language possible. In one short paragraph, there’s pandemonium, camera flashes exploding, posing like a supermodel. It paints Abrams as something beyond human and characterizes her the sort of being you would read about in the legends and myths of antiquity, when the gods and the goddesses roamed the earth, interacting with the mortals.

“Abrams excelled in academics and was always in advanced studies…Her interests were vast: physics, chemistry, history, psychology, mythologies, biographies, poetry. During our conversation Abrams recalls speeches, debates and poetry that she studied in her youth, and recites from memory the opening stanza of Paul Laurence Dunbar’s poem ‘We Wear the Mask.'”

Amazing!  She’s an expert at practically everything and can recite poetry FROM MEMORY!!! No mention of anything related to athletics (heh) though, but even gods are not always spared some degree of human imperfection. But wait, there’s more:

Abrams is the author of eight romance novels under a pseudonym, started two small businesses, is a New York Times best-selling author under her own name and is a superfan of “Star Trek” and Southern hip-hop, including one of her favorite rappers, Ludacris. She is scholarly, but she can also wax poetic on football. She is a policy wonk, but she can effortlessly pivot to sending goofy memes to the children of good buddies. She is a pop culture junkie who also is very literate on the sway and potential of technology. She is secure in her identity as a black woman but also sees herself as appealing broadly to people of all colors and identities. (Exit polls in the Georgia governor’s race proved her right about that.) She is effusive about the accomplishments of her sisters and brothers but also talks openly about her brother Walter’s long-term battles with mental health and drug addiction. Politics is a profession that attracts fakers, but it seems to me that Abrams is, for lack of a better phrase, mad real.

Holy shit! What’s so funny about this is how it’s such a puff piece cliche of the most nauseating variety. While the intellectual powerhouse is in her element when she’s deeply immersed in esoteric texts and solving the complex problems of our age, she’s just as comfortable doing stupid human things.See, she’s better than you but she’s just like you at the same time. She likes memes and football. She’s a genius, but she’s no stuffy nerd. She’s “mad real.”

Political puff pieces always portray the politician as all things to all people, as someone whose problem solving capabilities transcend ideology and tribalism. And it always leads to empty bullshit like this:

“She calls herself a “pragmatist,” which is a necessary asset for a Democrat in a state long controlled by Republicans. She also embraces the label “progressive”; in the race for governor she campaigned on expanding Medicaid. Ideologically, she falls somewhere between Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden: As her state’s Democratic leader, she worked on behalf of low-income and middle-class residents, defeating sales taxes; she championed reproductive rights, supported military families and protected public education and Medicaid from budget cuts; and as a mentor she launched a program to train young people in Democratic Party politics. In my reporting I have heard grumblings that some black Democrats in Georgia did not feel Abrams was always with them in political fights, but there’s wide agreement that she is focused on taking action and getting results. To do that, Minority Leader Abrams crossed the aisle often to work with Republicans. One of her admirers is Nathan Deal, the former two-term Republican governor of Georgia.”

All the corporate dem buzzwords are there. She’s a fierce progressive warrior, but she’s also a pragmatist who reaches across the aisle to get stuff done. She’s everything and nothing all at once. If you’re not impressed yet, here’s the link. It goes on and on for ages though: Full story here

Reminds me of these lyrics from the Pet Shop Boys song Ego Music:

There’s a real purity to my work
      A childish innocence
But I’m also smart and sophisticated
I mean, I grew up on the street
      Sometimes I think I’m a simple folksinger
Other times a scary witch diva
      What can I tell you?
      I’m an artist

And of course I’ve always had the humanitarian vision
      I think everyone knows that
My commitment is to my career
      And then giving something back

      Ego music
      It’s all about
      Vacuous slogans
      Innocuous sentiment
      Ego music
      It’s all about
      Fake humility
      Sense of entitlement

I have a dumb little theory— and maybe I give JoeMentia and campaign too much credit:

Maybe this was his attempt at a Sister Suljah moment:

Throw a black (and Female = I.D. politics’ delight) politician under the bus on LIVE television (MSDNC, no less) as a way of saying, ala 1992, I don’t NEED your “coalition” in order to get elected.  mic drop.

They tout her as a female version of Beto or Pete—young,hip,cool,articulate…..but she’s still for the status quo, ladies and gentlemen!Your bank accounts are safe with her.

My brother in law has a crush on her.I told him that if he didn’t have an income twice the size of Bloomberg’s,forget it.He’d never score.

        “Beto or Pete”

since when are either of those guys ‘hip’ or ‘articulate’?

young, i’ll give you, but in this case, not a positive.

beto is a goofball, i wouldn’t vote for him to run a lemonade stand

and bootygig should stick to his balliwick, which I personally believe is spycraft

but i dont want a spy for president, the last one didn’t work out well

“She’s everything and nothing all at once.”

we had that before, too.  never works out.

And that she hangs out with the wrong type of Democrats. That the CIA Post is writing puff pieces should be a big red flag.

I will commend her on voting issues.

      And she likes Star Trek!

I think there’s a place for Abrams, but it ain’t the White House or the Naval Observatory.

Joe’s eventual exceptionally perfect pick will make Abrams look like a has been.  Of course it shouldn’t be hard to make her look like a has been.

I gave some $ because Abrams had hired Greg Palast to find the purged voters. Then came Bloomberg. For 5M, the job should be done.

      never in a million years.

she’s not an ‘exciting’ person, & her policies are reheated porridge.

they really overestimate how well their propaganda works.

    • #317250

…if I didn’t know for a fact that she’s a puppet of the treasonous piece of filth Neera Tanden- who has done more to damage the Democratic Party than anybody else, outside of Hillary Clinton or Debbie Scatterbrained Lush.

Yeah, Stacey got robbed by the Klansman Brian KKKemp. But that’s where my empathy for her ends.  When you throw in with the likes of Tanden & Bloomberg, I don’t give a cherub’s pink little ass about anything you have to say, after that.

And as far as Kyle’s prediction of Gretchen Whatserface or Amy Saladcomb getting the VP nod, he’s probably on to something.  And in Gretchen’s case – considering she’s really done NOTHING to deserve such recognition – I’m guessing if she gets the nod, they might as well come out and directly admit that she stole the Michigan primary on Dementia Joe’s behalf.  Quid Pro Quo and all that.

It is a domme thang. Take the most centrist, hostile to progs pick of the 12 or so possibilities, the one who is least popular with blacks (even more than Buttigieg, and she has a really dodgy past when she was a DA) and the one who is close to bottom with voters under 45, and ram her down your throats. Double dog dare you you (meaning Dems, not you per se) to defy, then they will blame the progs and PoC if/when Groper Joe losses to the orange piece of shit wannabe dictator.

Klobuchar is literally the worst of the 12 on every level, unless you count Benghazi Rice, the humanitarian bomber, who will supercharge the RWNJ’s.

My 2nd most likely pick is Kamshaft Harris,  then Whitmer, and then Lujan Grisham, with, Duckworth as the wild card.

Or it doesn’t haven’t to have any spin or narrative to it all. They just do the internal polling and crunch the numbers.

And maybe the insiders really understand that if Biden is allowed to stay as the presumptive nominee, and then become the nominee, that it will be absolutely essential that his running mate is seen as utterly plausible as his replacement. Because they may know that there’s a real chance that the electorate will be asked to vote for a candidate who is kept under wraps for the last few months running up to election day, and that they’ll understand that the running mate is their option for replacing Trump. In other words, Biden might not even be getting sworn in, so the choice of his running mate will be for one who can plop down behind the desk in the Oval Office on day one.

None of the above has to turn out to be the case as long as swing voters in swing states worry about that scenario, and look ready to vote accordingly. And that possibility could be what ends the chances of Harris. Imo she’s at risk of polling very poorly in swing states in a head to head against Trump. Probably ditto that for Susan Rice, and definitely for Abrams. And the party will know this.

          • #317964

Klobuchar is a lightweight, completely ill-tempered hack

            so out of her depth

he would be a fuckstick of a POTUS, but a 10 year younger Biden (ie still has his brain intact, unlike now) could at least handle the basics (ie skillfully run the country in the plazzy left wing ditch of neoliberalism with some aplomb and efficiency)

Klobuchar as POTUS is like having a drunk 60 year scouser auntie with zero charisma and a propensity to toss a pint of piss at you when she trips over an electric cord and blames YOU for it

she was the personality and warmth of frozen moose shite, and is not the sharpest tool in the shed by a fucking furlong and half

          “Go big or go home”

So they just put the photo of her out there, and then the public could respond to the totality of Stacey Abrams. Either that moment came or she was never going to be in consideration.

I was overweight in High School, and I’m carrying extra pounds now as a retiree, so I’m not throwing stones. But nowadays a number of people will correlate your weight to your commitment to making good decisions as a politician, so this was going to be an issue for her. Lol, if I was going to be a visible member of Team Bernie (water boy?) I’d diet harder. 😉 People would have wondered about Abrams commitment.

      • #317533

This Stacey person obviously has an inflated sense of herself.  And I don’t care that she’s fat.  Even if she was anorexic she’d still be a useless twat.

@babel17 It reminds me of those Trump memes where people would photoshop his face on Rocky and captain America, but those were at least somewhat tongue in cheek. The Abrams one is meant to be taken seriously which is why it is so funny.

I actually think the one with the mirror is the best one. It’s the way all the elements come together and form something uniquely ridiculous that I find so entertaining. For one thing, she’s holding up a mirror to her face but her eyes are closed, so the whole concept is illogical from the start. Then there’s the extreme close-up with the contemplative, almost zen like facial expression she’s trying to pull off, and the plain background combined with the way her left hand appears to be grazing the side of the mirror rather than holding it, which makes it look like it’s just floating there. She’s trying too hard to be…well, I have no idea really, but she’s trying too hard to be something.

And then there’s the mural, but that one makes sense, as it is common for mortals to do such things in order to pay homage to the gods and goddesses. An offering of sorts…

Everything about it is horrible.  Lighting, angle, concept…  She ain’t ready for Vogue just yet.
