It would help improve user experience, either short-term (for emotional, high drama topics) or long-term (where just sometimes people don’t and can’t get along – irreconcilable differences sort of thing).  Thanks!

      Hi cup,

An ignore feature will “Balkanize” JPR just as it did at the other place that cannot be named.

If someone causes distress then ignoring is easy – don’t read what they post or write.

“Balkanize” it means, but our thinking went this way:

If you put in an easy method to ignore a pest, then soon everyone is ignoring the pest when they SHOULD be reporting them.

So, an ignore button actually caused more harm than good. Even on the first two versions of JPR.

Like you say, @thouartthat , the easiest way to ignore someone is to just ignore them. BUT, if they are causing trouble and their posts make you cringe, we’d actually like for you to report them.

I just reported myself this morning for being a stupid, hateful asshole. They haven’t banned me yet, but I have hope….

          Hi sffh,

Balkanize means – to break up (a region, a group, etc.) into smaller and often hostile units.

At the place that cannot be named it led to rampant tribalism where various factions never shared views or opinions because they never saw each other online.

One way they annoy and insult each other is to announce, “I’m putting you on ignore.” They’re not allowed to call you a stupid jerk, so the ignore feature their way to say, “You have nothing to offer.” It’s consistent with their behavior in general. They could disagree with each other by offering opinions and supporting facts, but they like to put people on ignore, alert posts, harangue those who deviate from the party line, and generally treat each other like dirt.
