President Biden has been briefed on the explosion, White House official says

A suicide bombing outside the Abbey Gate at Kabul’s airport in Afghanistan Thursday injured at least three U.S. troops, U.S. officials confirmed.

A U.S. official indicated that the attack set off a firefight at Abbey Gate, where last night, there were 5,000 Afghans and potentially some Americans seeking access to the airport.

The bombing comes hours after the State Department warned Americans outside the gates of the Kabul airport to “leave immediately” due to the increasing terrorist threat.

A White House official told Fox News that President Biden has been briefed on the explosion. Biden was scheduled to meet with his national security team at 9:15 a.m. ET.

At least 13 people, including children, have reportedly been killed in an apparent suicide attack outside the airport in Afghanistan’s capital on Thursday. US troops have been injured as well.

US Department of Defense Press Secretary John Kirby has confirmed the “complex attack” has “resulted in a number of US & civilian casualties”.

Reuters cited an unnamed US official claiming that initial reports suggest the blast is believed to be caused by a suicide bomber. Up to three US troops may have been injured as well. A Taliban spokesman also told Reuters that the attack killed at least 13 people outside the airport, including children, and injured many others. Taliban guards were among those who were hurt by the blast, the official said.

      Why is this the lead?

Does it mean they woke him up for this?

Or that they don’t bother him for most important events in the US and around the world?

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An explosion went off Thursday outside Kabul’s airport, where thousands of people have flocked as they try to flee the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. Officials offered no casualty count, but a witness said several people appeared to have been killed or wounded.

Western nations had warned earlier in the day of a possible attack at the airport in the waning days of a massive airlift. Suspicion for any attack targeting the crowds would likely fall on the Islamic State group and not the Taliban, who have been deployed at the airport’s gates trying to control the mass of people.

The Pentagon confirmed the blast, with no immediate word on casualties.

Adam Khan, an Afghan waiting outside the airport, said the explosion went off in a crowd of people waiting to enter the airport. Khan, who said he was standing about 30 meters (yards) away, said several people appeared to have been killed or wounded, including some who lost body parts.

According to AP. No surprise here; the Taliban have absolutely no reason to do such a thing.
