      I have to bug out early today, but this should go quickly.

      Many of you know that Thomas Edison promoted DC electrical power, while Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse pushed for AC power. Obviously AC won out, but why? What is the advantage of AC over DC that makes it better?

      Can’t send DC long distances because of the line losses.

        @gzeush

        AC power can be fed through transformers to raise or lower its voltage. This is a huge advantage because it can be sent over miles of power line at higher voltages, which minimizes losses, then transformed to a lower voltage for use in your house. It is common for the conductor at the top of the pole to carry 7,200 volts or 14,400 volts which is then reduced to 240 volts as it feeds into your house. A DC power system cannot match this, and requires a generating station every few miles, an extremely impractical limitation. Your prize is an electric fence controller, which should provide you with hours of entertainment if you have nosy neighbors or unpleasant relatives.

          He-he, you forget that I regularly sling millions of volts down at the lightning range.

      They discuss this in the movie, “The Current War.” I watched it but I don’t remember. Something about the current needing less voltage?

        DC current cannot be run through transformers to change its voltage. That means it has to go into the transmission lines at the same voltage as it will be used at your house. This means big losses over long distances.

      I don’t know, but I do know Tesla was born in Croatia.

      Do I win anything?
