      “Where palm trees grow and rents are low.” –Neil Diamond. “I am… I said.”

      As you drive across California’s Imperial Valley, you can see huge groves of date palms. These are not native to California. Neither are most of the very tall palm trees that line the streets of Los Angeles, although they are a close relative that look almost the same as the native palms. There is only one palm tree native to our southwestern desert. What is it called?

        And it’s pretty straightforward, not some weird trick name like “Grateful Dead Palm” or anything like that.

        Nor is it in the palm family. It comes from Australia.

        Settlers in NoCal whacked down all the redwood forests in the East Bay to build houses and replanted with fast growing, and useless for building, eucalyptus. Thanks, guys.

      Native to Palm Springs.

        @gzeush is a winner.

        The California fan palm is the only palm tree native to California, or the rest of the southwestern United States, for that matter. Florida has eight or nine native palm tree varieties, but Florida Man is determined to cut them down, so they won’t last long. The California fan palm is the one you see in places like Joshua Tree National Park. They normally retain their fronds, which form big skirts that extend all the way to the ground. If you walk quietly through a grove of fan palms, you can hear all sorts of birds and animals rustling around among the fronds. The fronds are usually trimmed away in urban areas because they present a big fire danger. The Mexican fan palm looks very similar, and is planted along avenues and boulevards all over the southwest.
