The Supreme Court has voted to strike down the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, according to an initial draft majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito circulated inside the court and obtained by POLITICO.
The draft opinion is a full-throated, unflinching repudiation of the 1973 decision which guaranteed federal constitutional protections of abortion rights and a subsequent 1992 decision – Planned Parenthood v. Casey – that largely maintained the right. “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” Alito writes.
“We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled,” he writes in the document, labeled as the “Opinion of the Court.” “It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.”
Deliberations on controversial cases have in the past been fluid. Justices can and sometimes do change their votes as draft opinions circulate and major decisions can be subject to multiple drafts and vote-trading, sometimes until just days before a decision is unveiled. The court’s holding will not be final until it is published, likely in the next two months.

This among other things completely de-legitimizes the Supreme Court. Making shitty ruling is one thing, but repudiating a firmly established and majority supported right will cause a lot of damage to the Constitutional system. It effectively sets up a court system that rules by fiat rather than law. This is all somewhat predictable given that the Democrats have put the citizens of this country in this position. Looking at you Obama. Who knows, maybe this will galvanize the electorate? Sadly, so many people are so propagandized that they will ignore this in favor of warmongering and virtue signalling.

Nixon said he would awaken? The silent minority or majority? Whatever. This will do it.
I predict that this will galvanize the left like nothing has since the deaths of our heroes in the 1960’s. Even people who ignore politics and don’t vote will take to the streets over this. The protests will be massive if they go through with it.
And it doesn’t take Nostradamus to predict that Biden will not care enough, and will do virtually nothing, apart from fumbling any opportunities otherwise presented by the bully pulpit.

The political divide in this country hasn’t been this vast and polarized since the civil war. And most polls show the issue of abortion is no different. The country is split down the middle. Feminism also isn’t what it used to be, and nowhere near as popular. In fact, majority of women don’t even identify as a “feminist” anymore.
There will be protests for sure. But those protesters were Democrat voters already. And they won’t convince anyone on the other side to change their mind. We are WAY too polarized.

Voters are polarized.
This issue, however, will galvanize the half of the country that are NON-VOTERS, too.
Polarization is what the corporate powers want you to believe is inevitable. This issue will unite thinking people. It will also unite knee-jerk reactionaries but they are not as many in number as the media wants you to believe they are.

It’s not even a law. It’s a court decision made by interpretation of 9 people in robes. That’s all abortion was hanging on in this country for a half-century!
Even Ruth Bader Ginsberg criticized the result of Roe v Wade. Not the actual decision, but she made the point that after that decision the feminist movement lost significant steam. It couldnt even get the ERA through. And feminists also failed to enshrine Roe v Wade into a more permanent legislation. It’s always been on the verge of being overturned.
Here’s the lesson, you can’t leave something like that up to courts. You can’t.

This woman is as guilty of redefining words as those she accuses.
How does the fetus, not baby, have more Rights than the woman it is developing in?
The fetus has 100% of the definitions of a parasite. There can be no pain felt by the fetus before the brain waves start at around 5 1/2 to 6 months.
Abortions have never been performed at 9 months. That ridicules on its face. Otherwise induced birth would be the same as an abortion.
Women need to have a say in their own health care. Not every pregnancy develops normally. In extreme cases it can be nothing more than a mass of hair, teeth and eyeballs. Literally. I personally know someone that that happened to.In biblical times there were legal induced abortions. Also because boy babies were valued above girl babies, the death rate of girl babies were much higher in the first 30 days before christening. Basically, abortion after the fact.
Because of the high death rate of newborn babies in general at the time, babies were not considered people until they were christened, i.e., named at 30 days.
This woman doesn’t know her own religion. But what else is new?We are an arrogant species, believing our fantasy based "facts" are better than the other person's fake facts.
If Row vs. Wade is overturned, women could lose the right to not get pregnant in 26 states.
The Republicans are four year olds. The Democrats are six year olds. There are no grownups.
Truth is not what you want it to be; it is what it is, and you must bend to its power or live a lie.

They must have a hard time walking around, what with all of those dollar signs floating around their eyes.
Big hauls in fund raising, probably for years, will be their main take out of this decision.

I have long since unsubscribed from any political emailing lists, but I would bet anything that the fundraising has already started. The campaigning has started, of course, even here. Let’s see – Trump!, Putin!, abortion rights!, Ukraine! and whatever else distracts from all the fucking lies spewed in the last campaign.

Like insulting people is going to get them to support your candidate. That’s their voter outreach.
We’ll see what happens. We already know the Democrats in Congress won’t pass an abortion rights statute, so it will devolve to the states. I can see abortion having a major impact on some statewide elections in different states, but I don’t think it will save the Democrats this November, not with unabated inflation that Biden will do nothing about.

never discount the Democraps’ talent for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. This Supreme Court decision will be great for Dem fundraisers, but you’re right: it won’t likely enable them to keep Congress. Not with Nattering Nabob for their President.

There will be no “right to privacy” despite what the 4th and 5th amendments say. They will go after birth control, expand their version of “Christian” theocracy. No limits on police power or the power of the state. And of course, big business will be unconstrained by any rules, because “Free Market” the latter which which will be bipartisan of course. One can hope they wear out their welcome, hopefully sooner not later.

Interesting timing. According to Politico, I think it was Politico, no draft of a Supreme Court opinion has been leaked before the official reading in all of history.
It has never happened before. I wonder why it happened now. The opinion was going to be made public in July. It’s released at least two months early.
Pepe Escobar says that’s because they know Ukraine’s going to fall soon and need a distraction. What do you think?

It would have a bigger impact if this were a presidential election year. Mid-terms tend to be more local and less centralized. If you live in a blue state, nothing changes at all from this decision. Abortion will continue to be legal in your state. So ultimately how motivated does that make people in that state? Abortion probably won’t be the priority issue because it’s not threatened in your state. Purple states may not see any change either because a law banning abortion won’t make it through their legislature.
November is also a bit away. 6 months is a long time in politics. Will this erode? Will there be other issues that steal the headlines? Most people are going to vote based on what the economy does in the coming months. The culture war stuff is a side show. If the economy goes into recession, that will dominate the election.

It seemed like both are and D s were going to run on this issue forever, with Rs threatening to overturn it but never doing it and Ds saying they’d fight to preserve it but never drafting legislation.
Wonder what gave the Rs the go-ahead to overturn it now?We are missing a piece somewhere.

I can’t watch Jimmy Dore or Breaking Points or anything political on YouTube without seeing a Brown ad. Brown TV ads are all over the place, as are her signs. I think Turner’s going be crushed, anyway, and this won’t make a bit of difference.
Besides, early voting started two weeks ago.

To get Ukraine off of people’s minds since it might fall soon? To distract from Pfizer’s revelation that their vaccine was only 12% effective and caused some pretty serious side-effects? To gin up the base on an issue that is irrelevant to the oligarchy so maybe the Dems win in November in spite of themselves?
You’re right, whatever it is, they’ll use this.

“Give us 666 more (weak corporatist) democrats in congress and we can have 60 votes to codify Roe v Wade into law”
Of course they had 60 “Democrats” in the Senate in 2009 and couldn’t even pass the health care bill that Barry Obama campaigned on (and won the primary with)… so take that with a grain of brimstone.
