(The Hill) The Supreme Court on Monday struck down a Louisiana abortion law, handing a win to abortion rights advocates who feared the conservative court would break with past rulings to rein in protections that emerged from the landmark decision in Roe v. Wade.

The justices voted 5-4 to invalidate Louisiana’s admitting-privilege law in the first major abortion ruling of the Trump era, which came after the court struck down a nearly identical Texas law four years ago.

The decision Monday was the clearest indication yet that the court, which now tilts more conservative with the addition of President Trump’s two nominees, is pursuing a more restrained approach than many abortion rights advocates feared.Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court’s liberal bloc to form a bare majority.

In a concurring opinion, Roberts said his vote was guided by deference to prior rulings, particularly the court’s 2016 decision in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, which struck down a nearly identical Texas law.

Not at all unexpected. They’re free to be reasonable as long as no corporate power or profits are harmed in the decision.

Just recently, enough of the right wing judges decided to protect gay/transgender rights and side with the dreamers against Trump. I assumed the court would function more or less the same after Kennedy’s retirement because it’s been apparent for some time now that these judges are little more than a super congress, just as politically motivated and just as prone to theater. Someone else would just play the swing vote and Roberts was the most obvious fit for the role.

The philosophy is simple: support civil rights if they don’t interfere with the capitalist bottom line. The Christian moralizing  is little more than pandering for the base voters who elect the politicians who appoint them, and the same goes for the resulting fearmongering from the democrats and msm. They don’t really care about any of that silliness.

Meanwhile, the same court votes 7-2 to uphold a permit for a gas pipeline (which the  great liberal icon RBG voted for btw). Goes to show…

nothing to do with ‘reasonable’.  The court will rule to keep easily understood ‘wedge issues’ in play as it eviscerates people’s livelihoods and civil rights.

and religious side.  I always argued with him that he would never get an abortion ban and I would never get single-payer health care because it keeps us distracted and we wouldn’t need to vote for red or blue no matter who.  You are right it is to distract us from our real enemies.  Enemies which by the way don’t have to worry about abortion access or the cost of medical care.

They know (at least Roberts does) that tossing RvW would really activate the Blue base. That is the last thing he wants.

And if that’s Roberts thinking, he’s smarter than I thought.

He doesn’t want the  corporation/wall street friendly conservatives on the court to get  a post natal abortion when we take power!

If the louisiana laws is enforced the clinton/biden wing of the democrat party who already have trump derangement syndrome  will go bat sh*t crazy and demand the radicalization of the democrat party dragging the corporate democrat establishment with them to protect roe v wade. They will demand as Malcolm X said “By any means necessary!” We saw a foretaste of this in the kavenaugh hearings. Roberts knows this. I know this. I am surprised you don’t know this.
