      -snip-

Alabama governor says ‘it’s time to start blaming the unvaccinated folks’ as pandemic worsens

Ivey went on to describe the shots as “safe” and “effective,” saying: “The data proves that it works. [It] doesn’t cost you anything. It saves lives.” But the remarks from the governor grew more pointed when she was pressed on what it would take for greater numbers of Alabamans to get their shots.“I don’t know. You tell me,” Ivey said. “Folks [are] supposed to have common sense. But it’s time to start blaming the unvaccinated folks, not the regular folks. It’s the unvaccinated folks that are letting us down.” Alabama remains the state with perhaps the lowest vaccination rate in the country, according to the CDC: Only 39.6 percent of its residents 12 and older have been fully vaccinated, compared to the 48.8 percent of Americans nationally who have gotten their shots.

On Thursday, Ivey told reporters she had “done all I know how to do” to boost her state’s vaccination numbers. “I can encourage you to do something,” she said, “but I can’t make you take care of yourself.” Federal health officials in recent days have warned of a “pandemic of the unvaccinated” as the highly infectious Delta variant of the coronavirus surges across the country. The Delta variant now represents more than 83 percent of the virus circulating in the United States, according to the CDC, and unvaccinated people account for 97 percent of coronavirus-related hospitalizations and deaths nationally.

If Republican governors can get more people vaccinated by promoting vaccines, that’s a good thing.

Mike DeWine said much the same thing, though to his credit he was always in favor of vaccinations. It seems there will be no lockdowns in Ohio, and that’s fine by me.

…..regarding this new Republican ‘abrupt shift’ on Covid vaccinations…….they all probably got the memo showing what their internal polling was indicating….

“…Rick Wilson, a one-time GOP strategist who knows the ins and outs of coordinated message campaigns, said that the abrupt shift looks like Republicans are concerned about the politics of being seen as the party that’s resistant to vaccines.

This wasn’t out of some sudden wake-up on the health implications,” Wilson wrote on Twitter. “It smells strongly of new polling.” Earlier, Wilson said that the shift in vaccinations was like a “bat signal” going up for Republicans, and he noted that “people are tripping over their own shells to get the word out…”

If it was “common”, something that was a natural instinct, people wouldn’t need education.  Now where does Alabama rank on measures of education???

I’ve got a feeling that it’s hitting their base hard and starting to backfire. Or maybe corporate America wants people out and spending money they don’t have.

Perhaps this is one of those times. All I can say is I know people who refuse to get vaccinated because they don’t trust either the government of Big Pharma. They simply assume they are lying. Kind of the boy who cried wolf scenario.

There is nothing I can do to convince them to get vaccinated, either, even though I have been and had no ill effects, and they know it.

Though “government of Big Pharma” is accurate in some senses.

it’s the “Government of Big Capital” no matter the product or service originally rendered.

… isn’t it true that vaccine compliance mostly correlates to financial status (poor people are far more likely to be unvaccinated than rich people)?

Maybe the GOP just discovered this. They’re always looking for ways to blame poor people.

you are assuming the GOP wants to win elections, but with the Democrats trying so hard to lose elections it would be amazing the Republicans lose so often if they were trying to win. They must also want to lose, or rather they have another goal, and that’s to destroy belief in the positive value of social institutions. As long as vaccines are mostly effective but not too effective there will always be enough of a disease to require vaccinations – and therefore profits. And just in case the vaccines are too effective they have to keep them out of the third world so that “other people” will always have the virus to give to us.

What? That’s illogical? Why kill potential customers  when you can sell to them? In the first place you’re using faulty math. Which is “better”, selling something to a quarter of the world at $35 a shot or selling to all the world at $4.99 a shot? Another wrong assumption: Capitalism is not about making money, it’s about having the power to kill people.
