KABUL/PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) – As moves toward peace pick up in Afghanistan, the Taliban are trying to show they have changed since the brutal days of the 1990s when they banned music and girls’ education and carried out public executions in Kabul’s football stadium.
“If peace comes and the Taliban return, then our return will not be in the same harsh way as it was in 1996,” Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told Reuters, referring to the year they took over in Kabul before their ouster by U.S.-led troops in 2001.
“We want to assure Afghan nationals that there will be no threat to anyone from our side.”
The comments come as moves toward peace negotiations have intensified, following a series of meetings between U.S. special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad and Taliban representatives over the past three months.

Hints:
1) They’re the one faction that never carries weapons.
2) They’re the one faction that all other factions enjoy controlling.
3) They’re the one faction that Islam says is cool to dominate and okay to beat.
4) They’re the one faction that Islam instructs to be patient and obedient in all things if they want to achieve jannah.
5) They’re the one faction that has been enslaved, bought and sold, forced into servitude, left to die, and murdered with impunity since time immemorial among these vicious tribal people. (Oh, scuse me- was I supposed to praise their “beautiful culture?” How culturally unrelative of me!!)

I already have a clean one in my library, thank you very much. English translation, but what the hey.
The Afghans, or at least the Pashtuns, are vicious and tribal, huh? That is what my ancestors said about the Comanche after the Civil War. Somehow, I get the feeling you would not approve if I used that term for Native Americans of any era. Just saying.

Trump made the right decision. Obama promised to get us out, but didn’t.
Cyrus, Alexander, Ghengis, Timur, British, Russians, and the U.S., and more. What is it about Afghanistan that empires feel a need to conquer it? I guess it is a crossroad between Europe and Asia, that ambitious empires have felt necessary to absorb.

and other mercenaries in. Of course, if the Taliban kills the mercenaries, the latter won’t get much worldwide sympathy. Mercenaries never do.

the Hazara since forever.
I don’t know what the Comanches and other American peoples did or didn’t do. But I recently read a short bio of Sacagawaea – a woman bought and sold like a horse – and came away thinking how ridiculous it is that we fashionably fetishize certain ethnicities as being “peaceful, nature-loving, full of wisdom and healing energies” etc.
I grant that Europeans and westerners also bought and sold each other like horses in the not-too-distant past. We evolved. Let’s hope (for the sake of Afghan women and their similarly-abused sisters across large tracts of the world) that everyone else catches up soon.
