Enormous wildfires are continuing to spread throughout California, Washington state and Oregon. Fourteen people have now died; a one-year-old boy in Washington, three people in Oregon, and ten in California. The death toll is expected to increase.

In Oregon, where Governor Kate Brown has warned that the state may experience its greatest ever loss of lives and property due to wildfires, more than 10 percent of the state’s population, approximately 500,000 residents, have been placed under evacuation orders due to encroaching fires. Tens of thousands have also been forced to evacuate their homes across Washington and California as entire towns and neighborhoods have been burned to the ground..

In California alone, 64,000 people are under orders to evacuate from 29 wildfires raging at once across the state, burning more than 3 million acres. In just nine days, more acres have burned than in the state’s average fire season. These are just the latest in a series of devastating fire seasons over the past three years. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) has reported that six of the top twenty largest wildfires in California history have occurred in 2020.

Butte County, north of Sacramento, has been hit especially hard with 247,000 acres burned and over 2,000 buildings and homes destroyed, of the total 3,900 structures destroyed in California. Cal Fire recently tweeted September 9 that “this year’s fire season has already hit the record books, with more acres burning in 2020 than any other year in the past 3 decades (since statewide figures have been tracked).” In 2018, Butte County was the site of the Camp Fire, which burned down the town of Paradise, becoming the deadliest wildfire in state history.

Not in an evacuation zone around Portland, but yellow skies and the smell of smoke is decidedly unpleasant – even inside. Co-workers are opening up their houses to those who do have to evacuate, so people are coming together.

being burned and ordered evacuated, 83,000 people and my town is coming up. A fire near Eagle Point it menacing my niece’s house and three friends are burned to the ground. all they ever worked like slaves to achieve. This is impossibly sad. Even from Alaska my heart is wrenched. Old forests, old orchards, a medical and commercial regional hub, national trust towns … all of it is horrible.

On high alert. Fortunately fires on my side of town are mostly controlled. There were at least 100 fires in my community on Tuesday. 2 within about a mile from my house and 5 fires within 2 miles of my wife’s forest property. 2 of which took fire fighters 3 hours each to put out. The closest one there was put out by locals despite the downed power lines. I need to send them a bottle of something. Point is, it is crazy bad here. @ohiobabarian

Which is literally at the Pacific Ocean which had most of the city on a level III evacuation order. A neighbor and a friend have vacation homes there and no one, and I mean NO ONE would have ever expected that town to be threatened by a forest fire.

I can feel the smoke getting into my lungs today, kinda like when I was really active as a youngster in the San Fernando Valley down in LA.

Here’s Oregon live from a couple days ago. Level II, be prepared to leave immediately reached to the sand. Level III was east of  Hwy 101 I believe. As of tonight, over 100 structures have been lost in the county.

Yes, my late father in law would rent a nice beach house in Neskowin just north of the city. Biggest worry was how to get out if the subduction zone let loose. That and avoiding being swept away in storm surf. Usually cold and wet.
