and then being tried for manslaughter.  Moscow Mitch is trying to get legislation passed removing all liability for businesses and governors that spread covid-19.  Rs should be tried for conspiracy to commit murder as they all knew exactly what would happen, that people, likely in the 1000s, would die.

Because it’s an election year and they knew that they needed to keep people behaving normally, i.e. spending money they don’t have. Otherwise that would have negative effects on economic numbers. And that is the biggest predictor of whether the party in power wins, the economy. And the shutdowns were certain to do this, so deny, refuse to acknowledge the need, belittle snowflake liberals for closing cities down over not even a “flu” virus, etc. And honestly, they never had any idea how to handle it, neither party is willing to put money where it really needs to be, but the rethugs were never going to lift a finger to help anyone but their plutocratic buddies. Plus there’s a certain, significant percentage of rethug leadership that actually believes their propaganda. Dumb and evil is not unfair here.

They gambled, stupidly, and now it’s blown up spectacularly, and we are all worse off for it, or will be. The question now is can rw media control the narrative and somehow blame the liberals for their failures. There’s the base 25-30% that will go to their graves convinced it’s the fault of the Dems, but that won’t be enough I would think.

Government (especially federal) reports have been universally untrustworthy since 1980 – every GD one of them – since Reagan. Inflation, unemployment, wages, crime, WMDs, Russia!, the Democratic primaries, you name it. Everything’s a lie, why believe anything?

..but the other part is the extreme Ayn Randization of America, with the concept that there is no such thing as society, only individuals.

We have become so atomized,so pitted against each other by the media promoting the splintering, that we no longer even know how to have a collective response to anything anymore.

If you can’t trust the information you can’t trust other people, because you can’t trust how they’ve formed their opinions. And if you can’t trust them all you can do is trust your own opinions, however you’ve formed them, and only trust yourself. But then people capable of self reflection realize that they might not be able to trust even themselves, so the only people able to live with self certainty are people able to ignore their own thoughts. Thus is the authoritarian path to dominance.
